La actualización de la lista de especies presentes en un país es una tarea continua que llena vacíos de información y apoya la toma de decisiones. En los últimos cinco años, ha habido un aumento del número de especies de mamíferos descritas como nuevas en Colombia, así como primeros registros y cambios taxonómicos. Con el fin de actualizar la información de las especies de mamíferos de Colombia, realizamos una revisión exhaustiva de los cambios taxonómicos de las 528 especies registradas en listas previas. Agregamos nuevas especies descritas, así como nuevos registros de especies ya descritas. Discutimos especies cuya presencia ha sido sugerida recientemente en Colombia, pero que no es respaldada por especímenes de museo. La lista actual de mamíferos en Colombia tiene 543 especies, con cuatro descritas en el último año. Esperamos que la lista sea una herramienta apoyar las necesidades de investigación, en especial las extensiones de distribución, los problemas taxonómicos y la conservación de los mamíferos del país. Finalmente, recomendamos que las actualizaciones de la lista sigan estándares nacionales e internacionales como Darwin Core, utilizado por el Repositorio de Información Global sobre Biodiversidad - GBIF, y el Sistema de Información sobre Biodiversidad de Colombia – SiB.

Using Ultraconserved Elements to Unravel Lagomorph Phylogenetic Relationships

New mammals from Colombia and Ecuador. Bulletin of the AMNH ; v. 32, article 29.

The Coffee Region of Colombia is one of the most representative areas of the country due to its cultural appeal. 200 of the 528 mammal species in the country occur in this region. Pre-existing knowledge about the group in this region has been obtained through indirect and direct sampling methods. We present new records of mammals of the “Reserva Forestal Protectora Bosques de la Central Hidroelectrica de Caldas (CHEC)”, located in the Coffee Region, based on vouchered citizen science records. To accomplish this, we held training workshops on the relevance of information provided by non-invasive vouchers for mammal collections that include bone remains, hairs, skin and other signs that can be found incidentally in the field by park rangers and other staff of the Reserve. In addition, we included photographic and video records of mammals taken by park rangers before and after the training workshops. We added vouchers obtained by the park rangers to the biological collection of the Natural History Museum of the Universidad de Caldas (MHN-UCa). Using this method, we obtained records of 34 mammalian species belonging to 20 families and 11 orders. We highlight the obtention of museum preserved vouchers of the Northern Naked-tailed Armadillo, Cabassous centralis (Miller 1899), and the Cauca Slender Opossum, Marmosops caucae (Thomas 1900), that had limited samples in national collections or had not been previously collected in the study area. With this work, a contribution network with the CHEC reserve staff was established, promoting the inclusion of these agents in the development of scientific research, and showing the relevance of collaborative science in assisting with filling information gaps about medium and large mammals.

New records of mammals of the Coffee Region, Central Andes of Colombia using citizen science

Despite high fragmentation and deforestation, little is known about wildlife species richness and occurrence probabilities in tropical dry forest (TDF) landscapes. To fill this gap in knowledge, we used a Sentinel-2-derived land-cover map, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data and a multi-species occupancy model to correct for detectability to assess the effect of landscape characteristics on medium and large mammal occurrence and richness in three TDF areas that differ in disturbance and seasonality in Ecuador. We recorded 15 species of medium and large mammals, distributed in 12 families; 1 species is critically Endangered, and 2 are Near-Threatened. The results indicate that species occupancy is related to low forest cover and high vegetation seasonality (i.e., high difference in NDVI between the wet and dry seasons). We believe that the apparent negative effect of forest cover is an indicator of species tolerance for disturbance. The three sampling areas varied from 98% to 40% forest cover, yet species richness and occupancy were not significantly different among them. Vegetation seasonality indicates that more seasonal forests (i.e., those where most tree species lose their leaves during the dry season) tend to have higher mammal species occupancy compared to less seasonal, semi-deciduous forests. Overall, occupancy did not vary between the dry and wet seasons, but species-specific data indicate that some species exhibit higher occupancy during the wet season. This research offers a good understanding of mammal species’ responses to habitat disturbance and fragmentation in TDFs and provides insights to promote their conservation.

Landscape Structure and Seasonality: Effects on Wildlife Species Richness and Occupancy in a Fragmented Dry Forest in Coastal Ecuador

A taxonomic framework for South American cottontail rabbits (Lagomorpha: Leporidae: Sylvilagus) was recently published by Diersing and Wilson (2017). Although we agree with some of its taxonomic conclusions (e.g., species status for S. apollinaris and S. fulvescens), we disagree with others. We provide herein evidence supporting S. andinus as a valid species based on morphological characters and novel molecular data. We also provide details of the morphological characters of S. apollinaris and S. fulvescens that support separating these from S. brasiliensis. We adduce data suggestive to the effect that—absent any type material—S. defilippi is at best a nomen dubium. Finally, we provide evidence in support of recognizing additional Neotropical species of Sylvilagus.Un esquema taxonomico para los conejos sudamericanos (Lagomorpha: Leporidae: Sylvilagus) fue recientemente publicado por Diersing y Wilson (2017). Aunque estamos de acuerdo con algunas de sus conclusiones (por ejemplo: estatus de especie valida para S. apollinaris y S. fulvescens), no estamos de acuerdo con las restantes conclusiones taxonomicas. Aportamos aqui pruebas convincentes sobre la caracteristica naturaleza de los caracteres morfologicos y moleculares de S. andinus, pruebas que esgrimimos en apoyo de la hipotesis que esta ultima es una especie valida, asi confirmando su escision de S. brasiliensis. Proporcionamos detalles de los caracteres morfologicos de S. apollinaris y S. fulvescens que confirman la decision taxonomica de asimismo separarlos de S. brasiliensis. Proporcionamos datos en aditamento que indican que a falta de cualquier material tipo para S. defilippi, este nombre es en el mejor de los casos un nomen dubium. Finalmente, ofrecemos datos y evidencia apoyando nuestras decisiones de reconocer un mayor numero de especies Neotropicales de Sylvilagus que previamente se conocian.
