This article scrutinizes the recently postulated link between the European
Marriage Pattern (EMP) and economic success. Multivariate analysis of 4,705
demographic observations, covering women’s marriage age, female lifetime
celibacy, and household complexity in 39 European countries, shows that the
most extreme manifestations of the EMP were associated with economic
stagnation rather than growth. There is no evidence that the EMP improved
economic performance by empowering women, increasing human capital
investment, adjusting population to economic trends, or sustaining beneficial
cultural norms. European economic success was not caused by the EMP and its
sources must therefore be sought in other factors.

A Companion to Mediterranean History

The structural study of the Balkan family began in the United States in the 1940s, producing several generations of scholars. Such scholarly continuity is much more recent on the European continent. Findings to date suggest the Balkan pattern of male equal partible inheritance could lead to four distinctive household formation patterns. But though it seems that the inheritance system played a key role, it was only in combination with additional elements that a distinctive pattern evolved. These additional elements were neolocality or patrivirilocality; environmental factors (abundance or scarcity of land, remote mountainous regions, islands); economic factors such as forms of pastoralism, mixed production or fishing; and agnatic kinship as opposed to community ties. Future research will have to continue to address the question of Balkan familial diversity, as well as how the Balkans compare to the rest of Europe with respect to crucial familial characteristics.

Sentimentality and nostalgia are two similar psychological constructs, which play an important role in the emotional lives of elderly people who are usually focused on the past. There are two objectives of this study - making cross-cultural comparison of sentimentality and nostalgia among Bulgarian and Greek elderly people using a questionnaire, and establishing the psychometric properties of this questionnaire among Greek elderly people. Sentimentality and nostalgia in elderly people in Bulgaria and Greece were studied by means of Sentimentality and Nostalgia in Elderly People questionnaire (SNEP), created by Gergov and Stoyanova (2013). For the Greek version, one factor structure without sub-scales is proposed, while for the Bulgarian version of SNEP the factor structure had four sub-scales, besides the total score. Together with some similarities (medium level of nostalgia and sentimentality being widespread), the elderly people in Bulgaria and Greece differed cross-culturally in their sentimentality and nostalgia related to the past in direction of more increased sentimentality and nostalgia in the Bulgarian sample. Some gender and age differences revealed that the oldest male Bulgarians were the most sentimental. The psychometric properties of this questionnaire were examined for the first time in a Greek sample of elders and a trend was found for stability of sentimentality and nostalgia in elderly people that could be studied further in longitudinal studies.

This article explores the forms of family organization in a mountain community of Greece during the end of the nineteenth and the early twentieth century. Special attention is paid to the concept of a system of household formation. It is argued that the dominant models fail to provide adequate understanding of the ways in which the desired domestic structures come into being and that one has to search beyond the “classical” demographic criteria to achieve a comprehensive account and understanding of household formation behavior.
