Hospitality environments, particularly casino VIP rooms, are often overlooked as “high stress” work environments. Faced with challenging work situations, frontline employees experience tremendous emotional demands during interpersonal interactions. As this leads to emotional exhaustion, frontline employees must find ways of managing emotional labor through coping strategies to reduce its negative impacts. This research explores strategies that VIP room’s frontline employees use in coping with emotional demands. The research identifies four families of strategies: opposition, rumination, emotional regulation, and positive cognitive restructuring, corresponding to surface acting, deep acting and genuine emotions, respectively. The study opens new avenues for further understanding of the coping and emotional labor concepts.

Coping with emotional labor in high stress hospitality work environments

Purpose Our study aims to understand what is known about happiness at work (HAW) in terms of publication, citations, dimensions and characteristics, as well as how knowledge about HAW is generated regarding theoretical frameworks, context and methods. Additionally, it explores future directions for HAW research. Design/methodology/approach This paper conducts a systematic literature review of 56 empirical articles published between 2000 and 2022 to comprehensively explore HAW. It examines publication trends, citation patterns, dimensions, characteristics, theoretical frameworks, contextual factors and research methodologies employed in HAW studies. Findings Our findings suggest that while HAW research has gained momentum, there is still a need for exploration, particularly in developing countries. Various theoretical frameworks such as the job demand-resources model, social exchange theory and broaden-and-build theory are identified, with suggestions for the adoption of less popular theories like the positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment (PERMA) model and flow theory for future investigations. The review contributes to workplace happiness literature by offering a comprehensive analysis spanning two decades and provides valuable insights for guiding future research toward exploring factors influencing employee well-being. Originality/value Our article offers a structured analysis of HAW literature, emphasizing the necessity for more extensive research, especially in developing nations. It provides valuable insights into the theories and dimensions associated with HAW, guiding future research and assisting organizations in formulating strategies to enhance employee happiness and overall well-being. 

Promoting well-being through happiness at work: a systematic literature review and future research agenda

Empirical studies on work-life balance (WLB) among employees without disabilities are abundant; in contrast, insufficient research exists on WLB and quality of life issues among employees with physical disabilities from Asian countries. This study used a nation-wide survey to examine how job satisfaction, leisure satisfaction, and satisfaction with family relationships, and satisfaction with friend relationships were positively associated with life satisfaction among employees with physical disabilities in South Korea. The results of the study demonstrated that job satisfaction, leisure satisfaction, and family and friend relationships contributed significantly to the life satisfaction of employees with physical disabilities. Job satisfaction and leisure satisfaction were positively correlated (Pearson’s r = .606). Participants who were satisfied with job and leisure were 16.86 times [95% confidence interval (CI): 10.04–28.31)] more likely to be satisfied with their lives compared to those who were not satisfied with either their jobs or leisure activities. Participants satisfied with either their jobs or leisure activities were 4.49 times (OR 4.49, 95% CI: 2.64–7.65) more likely to be satisfied with their lives compared to those not satisfied with either their jobs or leisure activities. These findings suggest that managing a healthy balance between work and leisure may are critical to enhancing life satisfaction among the population with disabilities. Future research should include cross-cultural studies with sub-dimensions of the measurement scales to improve life satisfaction in this population.

Work, Leisure, and Life Satisfaction for Employees with Physical Disabilities in South Korea

Leisure and work are often thought of as independent parts of life. While leisure has the potential of contributing to HRD and vice versa, it has received limited attention in HRD. Therefore, in this study, we used an integrative literature review to explore how leisure can contribute to HRD and become an HRD intervention. To search the literature, we used keywords relating to leisure, work, and HRD. One among several leisure types found was serious leisure. Serious leisure requires engagement in the activity with a sense of self-development. The results from serious leisure could include knowledge and skill development, which might not be related directly to short-term work performance improvement. Despite this, it allows for intrinsically sustainable self-development. Such self-development can yield positive results in every element of life, including work. To facilitate serious leisure as an HRD intervention, practitioners and policymakers need to eliminate leisure constraints.

Serious Leisure as Human Resource Development Intervention

Orientation: Associations between a person’s character strengths, happiness and well-being can be explained with the overlap that they have with personality. Casino employees’ working hours were and are increasing, which means that their leisure time is decreasing concomitantly, with only 20 hours per week being used in pursuit of leisure activities. Research purpose: The primary purpose of this research was to investigate 1502 casino employees’ personality types and the relationship it has on their leisure life and overall happiness. Motivation for the study: The importance of leisure participation and time to take part in leisure activities, and the effect it has on casino employees’ happiness in the workplace, warrants further investigation. If human resources managers and general management want happier casino employees in the workplace, they should focus on their personality types and make more leisure activities available to them; which will result in a happier workforce. Research design, approach and method: The target population consisted of 3032 casino employees, who received the questionnaires and were given the opportunity to complete the questionnaires anonymously. An availability sampling technique was used, based on the number of casino employees who were willing and available to complete the questionnaires. Main findings and practical/managerial implications: In terms of the structural equation modelling, it was found that the positive personalities such as extraversion and openness to experience correlated well with leisure life and happiness. In this study, the standardised regression weights showed that if an individual has a negative personality, he or she will not necessarily be unhappy. A positive relationship was found between positive personality traits such as cooperativeness and agreeableness and leisure life and happiness. Considering mediation effects, leisure preference was the greatest partial mediator between happiness and personalities. Contribution: Human resource managers of casino establishments can use these results to determine the type of personality of casino employees that will experience a good leisure life and happiness in relation to the workplace, contributing to positive psychology and human resource literature. The relationship between personality types and leisure time activities amongst Casino employees’ workplace expectations

The aim of this study was to determine whether casino employees’ benefits and their feelings about the company influence their experienced happiness. A total of 1 502 casino employees were surveyed (females = 57%; males = 43%). They completed a company benefits, feelings and happiness questionnaire within the work context. Data were analysed to predict what company benefits and whether feelings about the company impact on the casino employees’ happiness; and also to test the mediation effects of company benefits on their happiness experienced through feelings about the company. In addition, structural relations between happiness and feelings about the company, and happiness and company benefits were tested. Findings from the regression analyses and structural equation modelling suggest that feelings about the company and company benefits such as staff meals and pension funds do predict personal happiness and positive feelings about the company where they are employed. With over 38 casinos in South Africa, to be the most sought after casino, quality service offered by casino employees will be the competitive advantage of attracting and retaining customers. The purpose of this article is to determine the demographic variables of the 1502 casino employees who completed the questionnaire and the relationship it has with their Quality of Work Life (QWL) domains. It was found that majority of the casino employees were females and young (between the ages of 18 and 34 years), indicated that in the next five years they expect themselves to work at another establishment and the majority of casino employees do not smoke, drink or gamble. In terms of crosstabulations, various findings are made between male and female casino employees, e.g. female casino employees have higher education levels than their male counterparts, more males smoke than females, and male casino employee’s drink more than females and the majority of males and females do not gamble. With regard to the Spearman correlations, it was found that economic and family domains are positively related to esteem and actualisation and negatively with commitment to the company. Looking at regression values, a statistical relationship was found between drinking and the economic and family QWL domain, knowledge QWL domain, and commitment to the company QWL domain. The SEM that was done was found to have acceptable fit and therefore indicated a relationship between demographic variables and QWL domains. The research contributes to the literature that is related to hospitality, human resource management and subjective well-being.

The effect of casino employees' demographic variables on quality of work-life domains

The purpose of the research was to determine the effect of leisure on the overall Quality of Work Life (QWL) of Front Office Employees (FOEs). This paper presents the results of a self-administered survey, consisting of 12 sections, used to collect data from 145 Front Office Employees in February 2010. A confirmatory factor analyses and a Spearman correlation coefficient were used to determine the relationship between Leisure time, Leisure preferences and Quality of Work Life domains. The study found that Leisure has a definite effect on the overall QWL of FOE; employees lack time to participate in leisure activities; and a positive relationship exists between Leisure and Physical health and safety. This type of research has not previously been conducted on FOEs in a South African hotel group and contributes largely to literature on leisure and QWL.
