Prevalence of sleep apnea and electrocardiographic disturbances in morbidly obese patients.
Matilde Valencia‐Flores,Matilde Valencia‐Flores,Arturo Orea,Violeta A. Castaño,Montserrat Resendiz,Maria J. Rosales,Verónica Rebollar,Victoria Santiago,José Gallegos,Rosa M. Campos,Jorge González,Jorge Oseguera,Guillermo García-Ramos,Donald L. Bliwise +13 more
TL;DR: There is a high prevalence ofSleep apnea in morbidly obese patients and the risk for cardiac arrhythmias increases in this population in the presence of a severe sleep apnea with severe oxygen desaturation with SaO2 < or = 65.

The siesta culture concept is not supported by the sleep habits of urban mexican students
Matilde Valencia-Flores,Violeta A. Castaño,Rosa M. Campos,Leon Rosenthal,Montserrat Resendiz,Patricia Vergara,Raúl Aguilar-Roblero,Guillermo Garcia Ramos,Donald L. Bliwise +8 more
TL;DR: Results call into question what is meant by the concept of a ‘siesta culture’, at least in this urban, educated, upper social economic scale (SES) population, and suggest that future studies in equatorial regions be undertaken to further appreciate the role of climate, photoperiod and/or culture in the tendency for humans to nap during the day.

Caffeine challenge in insomniac patients after total sleep deprivation.
Rafael J. Salín-Pascual,Matilde Valencia-Flores,Rosa M. Campos,Alejandra Castaño,Priyattam J. Shiromani +4 more
TL;DR: Patients with insomnia had a higher sensitivity to the diurnal awakening effect of caffeine even after one night of SD, which suggests that changes in the adenosine receptors could, in part, be responsible for the hyperarousal state that has been reported in primary insomnia.

Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) and sleep apnea in aged women.
Matilde Valencia-Flores,Rosa M. Campos,José Méndez,Reyes Haro,Elizabeth Schenkel,Donald L. Bliwise,Christian Guilleminault +6 more
TL;DR: The data showed that the level of sleepiness during the day in each subject depended in part on the severity of her respiratory disturbance, and the group (n = 7) of elderly females with apnea and hypopnea index higher than 20 was more sleepy.
A factor replication of the Sleep-Wake Activity Inventory (SWAI) in a Mexican population
Matilde Valencia-Flores,Leon Rosenthal,Violeta A. Castaño,Rosa M. Campos,Patricia Vergara,Montserrat Resendiz,Javier Aguilar,Raúl Aguilar-Roblero,Donald L. Bliwise +8 more
TL;DR: The factor structure of the Sleep-Wake Activity Inventory (SWAI) in a Mexican population is described and the possible utility of the SWAI in a siesta culture is extended.
