Soil erosion resistance (reflected by rill erodibility and critical shear stress) is a useful parameter for evaluating soil erosion subjected to concentrated flow. The changes in soil properties and root trait induced by straw incorporation and land degradation likely affect soil erosion resistance considerably. Nevertheless, few studies have been conducted to quantify the effects of straw incorporation on soil erosion resistance of degraded croplands in the black soil region. In this study, a large hydraulic flume (5.0 m in length and 0.4 m in width) was utilized to quantify the impacts of straw incorporation on soil erosion resistance of four croplands with different degradation degrees (non-degradation, light degradation, moderate degradation and strong degradation) and further to determine the related influencing mechanisms in Northeast China. The results showed that straw incorporation reduced rill erodibility by 44.9%, 41.2%, 27.1% and −11.4% for non-degradation, light degradation, moderate degradation and strong degradation croplands, respectively. Land degradation degree had much stronger influence on soil erosion resistance than that of straw incorporation and regulated the roles of straw incorporation in mitigating erosion. Rill erodibility was significantly and negatively correlated with clay content, organic matter content, aggregate stability, soil cohesion, physical crust thickness and root mass density, whereas positively correlated with silt content. The increase in soil organic matter and clay content was the key to improve soil erosion resistance and prevent land degradation. Straw incorporation was suggested in non-degradation, light degradation and moderate degradation croplands, but vegetation restoration was recommended in strong degraded cropland. The results are helpful to understand the mechanism of straw incorporation to improve soil erosion resistance and make reasonable agricultural management strategies in semi humid region. 

Effects of straw incorporation on soil erosion resistance along a land degradation gradient in the black soil region of China

How does straw-incorporation rate reduce runoff and erosion on sloping cropland of black soil region?

Mulching is widely recognized as an effective soil and water conservation measure all over the world. Nevertheless, a comprehensive evaluation of mulching's effectiveness in controlling soil erosion and the influencing factors is still lacking. A global meta-analysis based on 421 runoff and 512 soil loss observations from 90 publications was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of mulching in reducing runoff and soil loss across a variety of variables (i.e. mulch type, mulch coverage and application rates, rainfall intensity, land use, soil texture, slope gradient, and slope length). Our meta-analysis shows that overall, mulching significantly reduced runoff and soil loss by 47.4% and 76.2%, respectively. Straw mulch and wood-based mulch are generally more effective in reducing runoff and soil loss than rock fragments, highlighting the effectiveness of organic materials in controlling water erosion. In general, increasing mulch coverage and application rates resulted in a significant reduction in runoff and soil loss. It is recommended, however, that mulch coverage should be at least 60% based on the trade-off between economic costs and ecological benefits, which can reduce runoff and soil loss by approximately 50% and 80%, respectively. An application rate of 0.3–0.4 kg m−2 for straw and 0.6–0.8 kg m−2 for wood-based mulch should be sufficient to effectively control soil erosion. The study also found that mulching is more effective in post-fire forests on medium-textured soils and less effective on steep slopes (>60%) and under both natural and simulated extremely heavy rainfall conditions (>90 mm/h). Overall, this study provides further insights into the impact of mulching on water erosion globally and proposes an overall framework for a precision mulching strategy (P-M-S) to guide the implementation of mulching in soil erosion control. 

The effectiveness of mulching practices on water erosion control: A global meta-analysis

In response to an increasingly dire pollution scenario, the Chinese government initiated the largest and most extensive environmental inspection campaign in history starting in 2016. Numerous polluting enterprises were closed due to environmental concerns in the rural areas. Drawing on two‐period panel data from the China Rural Development Survey, this study revealed the inherent mechanism of the polluting enterprises closure on local rural livelihoods using the difference‐in‐differences method and structural equation model, with reference to the sustainable livelihood framework. Results showed that shuttering polluting enterprises enhanced rural households' livelihood capital, notably in human, natural, and physical aspects, and promoted labor migration. Additional heterogeneous analysis revealed that the enhancements were notably more pronounced in Southern China and among affluent demographics. Based on the findings, we suggested the local government should support the development of sustainable agriculture and green industries and pay more attention to vulnerable populations when making policy decisions. The use of mandatory directives, such as shutting down polluting enterprises, is a common strategy in developing countries. This study presents an analytical framework for understanding the impact of environmental governance on the livelihoods of rural households in developing countries, contributing to a better balance between rural environmental management and livelihood improvement in these regions.

Does the closure of polluting enterprises improve rural livelihoods? Evidence from rural China

Abstract Soil erosion is a serious threat to agriculture and environmental sustainability in the risk‐prone rainfed Himalayan ecosystem. Hence, runoff and soil loss mitigation ability of four maize‐based intensified systems; maize ( Zea mays ) + turmeric ( Curcuma longa ), maize + ginger ( Zingiber officinale ), maize + colocasia ( Colocasia esculenta ), and maize + sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas ) were tested against the sole maize. The study recorded 41 erosive events during the 2020–2022 monsoon season. A principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to transform correlated rainfall parameters into orthogonal principal components. A two‐dimensional biplot analysis examined the relationship between PCs, rainfall events, and rainfall parameters. The rainfall events were divided into three regimes based on cluster analysis using PC. Rainfall regime 1 was characterized by low rainfall, I30, rainfall erosivity ( E ), and moderate rainfall duration ( D ), regime2 with moderate rainfall, short duration, high I30, and E , and regime3 with high D , I30, and rainfall erosivity. The soil loss of regime‐3 was 9.29 and 3.24 times higher than regime‐1 and regime‐2, respectively. Cover crops reduced runoff by 21.5%–69.3% and soil loss by 54.1%–77.0% over control. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that rainfall parameters (I30, I60, D , and E ) had a significant direct influence across the systems, explaining 37.7%–54.9% of response variable variance, with E being the most influential (47.4%–54.9%), indicating varied impacts on runoff and soil loss. The sweet potato was best suited with maize as an intercrop to minimize soil erosion and maximize the system's profitability.
