Re-creation of a Key Step in the Evolutionary Switch from C3 to C4 Leaf Anatomy
Peng Wang,Roxana Khoshravesh,Shanta Karki,Ronald Tapia,C. Paolo Balahadia,Anindya Bandyopadhyay,W. Paul Quick,W. Paul Quick,Robert T. Furbank,Robert T. Furbank,Tammy L. Sage,Jane A. Langdale +11 more
TL;DR: Induction of chloroplast and mitochondrial development in rice vascular sheath cells through constitutive expression of maize GOLDEN2-LIKE genes reflects that seen in “proto-Kranz” species, and a key step toward engineering C4 rice has been achieved.

Targeted knockdown of ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase in rice mesophyll cells.
Chirag Maheshwari,Robert A. Coe,Shanta Karki,Sarah Covshoff,Ronald Tapia,Aruna Tyagi,Julian M. Hibberd,Robert T. Furbank,William Paul Quick,Hsiang-Chun Lin +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors generated antisense constructs targeting two of the five Rubisco small subunit genes (OsRBCS2 and 4) which account for between 30-40 % of the RBCS transcript abundance in leaf blades.

Targeted knockdown of ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase in rice mesophyll cells impact on photosynthesis and growth
Chirag Maheshwari,Robert A. Coe,Shanta Karki,Sarah Covshoff,Ronald Tapia,Aruna Tyagi,Julian M. Hibberd,Robert T. Furbank,W. Paul Quick,W. Paul Quick,Hsiang-Chun Lin +10 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the knockdown of multiple genes is required to completely reduce Rubisco accumulation in MCs and allow us to characterize gene function and isoform specific suppression on photosynthesis and growth.
Combining canopy reflectance spectrometry and genome-wide prediction to increase response to selection for powdery mildew resistance in cultivated strawberry.
Ronald Tapia,Amr Abd-Elrahman,Luis F. Osorio,Vance M. Whitaker,Seonghee Lee +4 more
TL;DR: In this paper , a single-trait Bayesian prediction method using 1,001 spectral wavebands in the UV-VIS-NIR region (350-1,350nm wavelength) combined with 8,552 SNP markers showed up to 2-fold increase in predictive ability over models using markers alone.
Targeted Knockdown of GDCH in Rice Leads to a Photorespiratory Deficient Phenotype Useful as a Building Block for C4 Rice
Hsiang-Chun Lin,Shanta Karki,Robert A. Coe,Shaheen Bagha,Roxana Khoshravesh,C. Paolo Balahadia,Julius Ver Sagun,Ronald Tapia,W. Krystler Israel,Florencia Montecillo,Albert de Luna,Florence R. Danila,Andrea Lazaro,Czarina M. Realubit,Michelle Grace Acoba,Tammy L. Sage,Susanne von Caemmerer,Robert T. Furbank,Asaph B. Cousins,Julian M. Hibberd,W. Paul Quick,Sarah Covshoff +21 more
TL;DR: Gas exchange measurements indicated an impaired ability to regenerate ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate in photorespiratory conditions, and MCs of gdch lines exhibited a significant reduction in chloroplast area and coverage of the cell wall when grown in air, traits that occur during the later stages of C4 evolution.
