An automatic speech recognition (ASR) system detects an endpoint of an utterance using the active hypotheses under consideration by a decoder. The ASR system calculates the amount of non-speech detected by a plurality of hypotheses and weights the non-speech duration by the probability of each hypotheses. When the aggregate weighted non-speech exceeds a threshold, an endpoint may be declared.

In a speaker recognition apparatus, audio features are extracted from a received recognition speech signal, and first order Gaussian mixture model (GMM) statistics are generated therefrom based on a universal background model that includes a plurality of speaker models. The first order GMM statistics are normalized with regard to a duration of the received speech signal. The deep neural network reduces a dimensionality of the normalized first order GMM statistics, and outputs a voiceprint corresponding to the recognition speech signal.

A “running range normalization” method includes computing running estimates of the range of values of features useful for voice activity detection (VAD) and normalizing the features by mapping them to a desired range. Running range normalization includes computation of running estimates of the minimum and maximum values of VAD features and normalizing the feature values by mapping the original range to a desired range. Smoothing coefficients are optionally selected to directionally bias a rate of change of at least one of the running estimates of the minimum and maximum values. The normalized VAD feature parameters are used to train a machine learning algorithm to detect voice activity and to use the trained machine learning algorithm to isolate or enhance the speech component of the audio data.

A system for determining an endpoint of an utterance during automatic speech recognition (ASR) processing that accounts for the direction and duration of the incoming speech. Beamformers of the ASR system may identify a source direction of the audio. The system may track the duration speech has been received from that source direction so that if speech is detected in another direction, the original source speech may be weighted differently for purposes of determining an endpoint of the utterance. Speech from a new direction may be discarded or treated like non-speech for purposes of determining an endpoint of speech from an original direction.

A system for generating channel-compensated features of a speech signal includes a channel noise simulator that degrades the speech signal, a feed forward convolutional neural network (CNN) that generates channel-compensated features of the degraded speech signal, and a loss function that computes a difference between the channel-compensated features and handcrafted features for the same raw speech signal. Each loss result may be used to update connection weights of the CNN until a predetermined threshold loss is satisfied, and the CNN may be used as a front-end for a deep neural network (DNN) for speaker recognition/verification. The DNN may include convolutional layers, a bottleneck features layer, multiple fully-connected layers and an output layer. The bottleneck features may be used to update connection weights of the convolutional layers, and dropout may be applied to the convolutional layers.

Voice activity detection (VAD) is an enabling technology for a variety of speech based applications. Herein disclosed is a robust VAD algorithm that is also language independent. Rather than classifying short segments of the audio as either “speech” or “silence”, the VAD as disclosed herein employees a soft-decision mechanism. The VAD outputs a speech-presence probability, which is based on a variety of characteristics.
