Optical identification using physical unclonable functions [Invited]

The concept of multi-homodyne coherent detection is used for stealth and secured optical communications, demonstrating a transmission rate of 20 Gbps under negative (in dB) optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), in a deployed multi-core fiber (MCF) network. A 10 GBd QPSK signal is assigned with a bandwidth of multi-hundreds GHz, optically encoded with spectral phase mask, and transmitted below ASE noise in the MCF channel. To enable such transmission scheme, a semiconductor based gain-switched laser (GSL) frequency comb, used as both the signal carrier and local oscillator (LO), are then mixed in intradyne coherent receiver. The ultra-short time-domain overlapping between the pulsed signal and the pulsed LO allows the authorized user to collect the information, while discriminating most of the noise. Consequently, the electrical SNR is dramatically improved compared to the optical SNR, resulting in optical processing gain. Nevertheless, ultra-short pulses mixing is rather susceptible to a chromatic dispersion (CD), which imposes a major challenge in this spread-spectrum transmission technique. In this contribution, the effect of CD in multi-homodyne coherent detection is analyzed in an analytic model and in experiments. The model suggests a modified CD transfer function, comprised of the optical sampling of a conventional CD transfer function. In addition, the SNR penalty associated with the CD effect is quantified, as well as its dependency in propagation length and overall GSL's bandwidth. To circumvent the devastating effect of the CD, multi-core fibers are proposed. Two different weakly-coupled cores of a homogeneous MCF allow the signal and the LO to co-propagate through a very similar dispersive channel. A field trial in a deployed 6.29 km MCF network has validated an encrypted and stealthy 20 Gbps coherent transmission, at -2 dB OSNR. 

A Field Trial of Multi-Homodyne Coherent Detection over Multi-Core Fiber for Encryption and Steganography

To provide secure and covert transmission for optical communication system at the same time, a quantum-noise stream ciphered optical stealth communication approach is proposed for the first time. In the proposed system, the optical pulses are time spread by a chromatic dispersion device and then phase modulated with optical codes at chip rate to realize an equivalent spectral encoding. Binary optical codes are converted to multiple level phase-shift keying signal according to Y-00 protocol. The encoded optical signals are attenuated to mesoscopic coherent states and sent to a public channel. The ciphered signals are stealthy transmitted under public channel noise. The availability and covertness of the optical stealth channel is verified by system simulations.

Quantum noise ciphered optical stealth communication based on equivalent spectral encoding.

Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) light is the most natural optical carrier to hide a message in the existing optical networks at photonic layer. To enhance the anti-intercept ability of the ASE-carried stealth channel, a novel optical stealth communication scheme based on quantum noise stream cipher is proposed. The ASE light is intensity modulated by the cipher-text according to Y-00 protocol, and then transmitted under public optical noise after power attenuation. The expression of quantum noise stream ciphered ASE signal is derived, and numerical simulation is carried out. A proof-of-concept experiment is set up to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme. The experiment results show that the quantum noise stream ciphered stealth signals can be transmitted over a 25 km single-mode fiber span error-free.

In the assumption of being able to read devices', sub-systems', and systems' fingerprint, a new model is proposed in order to address services including security, authentication, identification, and monitoring.

A novel all-optical stealth and secured transmission is proposed and demonstrated. Spectral replicas of the covert signal are carried by multiple tones of a gain switched optical frequency comb, optically coded with spectral phase mask, and concealed below EDFA’s noise. The secured signal’s spectrum is spread far beyond the bandwidth of a coherent receiver, thus forcing real time all-optical processing. An unauthorized user, who does not possess knowledge on the phase mask, can only obtain a noisy and distorted signal, that cannot be improved by post-processing. On the other hand, the authorized user decodes the signal using an inverse spectral phase mask and achieves a substantial optical processing gain via multi-homodyne coherent detection. A transmission of 20 Gbps under negative −7.5 dB OSNR is demonstrated here, yielding error-free detection by the eligible user.
