Mitigation of transient ground potential rise in gas insulated substations during very fast transient overvoltage

Assessment of very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) requires good knowledge of the behavior of gas-insulated substation when subjected to very high frequencies. The international standards and guidelines generically present only recommendations regarding the VFTO suppression without a technical and mathematical background. Therefore, to provide an accurate image regarding the critical locations across a gas-insulated substation (GIS) from a transient response point of view, a suitable modeling technique has to be identified and developed for the substation. The paper aimed to provide an accurate assessment of the GIS holistic transient response through an electromagnetic field theory (EMF) approach. This modeling technique has always been a difficult task when it came to gas-insulated substations. However, recent studies have shown that through suitable Computer-aided design models, representing the GIS metallic ensemble, accurate results can be obtained. The paper investigated several simplifications of the computational domain considering different gas-insulated substation configurations in order to identify a suitable modeling approach without any unnecessary computational effort. The analysis was performed by adopting the partial equivalent element circuit (PEEC) approach embedded into XGSLab software package. Obtained results could provide useful hints for grounding grid designers regarding the proper development and implementation of transient ground potential rise (TGPR) mitigation techniques across a gas-insulated substation.

The following paper presents an overview of the current state of art on the subject of Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) technology in order to understand the necessity of the grounding grid design models. Furthermore, different studies regarding existing applied technologies are considered in order to create an accurate review on GIS grounding models. For a better understanding of current GIS modeling methods an evaluation of the procedures regarding GIS grounding system design is conducted. The focus was to identify a suitable model technique for the GIS assemble and to obtain a proper grounding grid design procedure.

Overview on computational methods of Gas Insulated Substation grounding gridanalysis

Electromagnetic Field Theory modelling applied to Gas Insulated Substations transient behaviour has always been a challenging task also because require a large amount of computer resources. On the other hand, the well know circuit theory approach analysis can provide a limited amount of information due to frequency limitations and the impossibility to consider the geometrical characteristics of the metallic enclosure. The paper starts with a state of the art review regarding current electromagnetic field method applications. In order to fulfil the shortcomings related with current electromagnetic methods a novel CAD three-dimensional approach is proposed and endorsed by a successful validation. The validation process was carried out using two different software packages based on distinct analytical hypothesis: electromagnetic field and circuit theory approach respectively. As a result, it was concluded that the metallic enclosure of GIS equipment could modelled through a metallic bars configuration.
