Communication partner training in aphasia: a systematic review.

Background: The initial motivation was our inability to capture the important but often elusive outcomes of interventions that focus on making a difference to the everyday experience of individuals with aphasia and their families In addition, a review of the literature and input from stakeholder focus groups revealed the lack of an integrated approach to outcome evaluation across diverse approaches to aphasia intervention Input from focus groups also indicated that existing classifications and models offering potential solutions are not always easily accessible and user friendly This research has been generously funded by a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care The views expressed here do not necessarily reflect those of the Ministry The authors thank staff at the Aphasia Institute and members of the Ontario Aphasia Centres Interest Group for their participation in the project, Drs Audrey Holland and Roberta Elman for useful feedback on earlier drafts of this article, Laura Dic

Factors predicting post-stroke aphasia recovery.

Background: The impact of aphasia on identity is frequently acknowledged, but there have been few theoretical or research publications focusing on identity as an explanatory construct in understanding quality of life issues for persons with aphasia and their significant others. This article is abbreviated from a keynote address at the 2004 Clinical Aphasiology Conference.Aims: The purpose of this article is to review concepts from the sociocultural literature that bear upon social identity and can be applied to an understanding of short- and long-term consequences of aphasia.Main Contribution: Theoretical premises related to social identity are outlined, then applied to the life experiences of persons with aphasia and their significant others. The clinical relevance of such concepts is illustrated through specific examples. Particular attention is paid to the recognition work involved in moving on with life in the context of aphasia. Aphasia as identity theft: Theory and practice

Internal influences include a growing interest in treatments that produce meaningful real life outcomes leading to enhanced quality of life. Externally, we are influenced by disability rights activists encouraging adjustments in philosophy and treatment and by consumers frustrated by unmet needs and unfulfilled goals. Most recently, a strong external influence is emanating from the curtailment of funding for our work that has caused a significant reduction in available services to people affected by aphasia.
