A method and system for detecting optical signal degradation or loss within the optical domain of a fiber network. Optical cross-connect switches (OCCS) are provided at network nodes. Optical data traffic is conducted between nodes via a fiber link. The fiber link extends between respective ports of the optical cross-connect switches at each network node. Dedicated signals for detecting faults are introduced and removed within the optical domain of the fiber communication network. In one embodiment, transmitter/receiver units are coupled directly to the fiber link for broadcasting optical signals for fault detection. In another embodiment, transmitter/receiver units are coupled to the fiber link through one or more dedicated ports within optical cross-connect switches (OCCS) at network nodes. Optical signals for fault detection are then broadcast or switched through working and/or spare fibers. Distinctive optical fault detection signals are used when the signals are broadcast or switched over working fibers. Optical signal impairment or loss for a particular link or span is detected simply and quickly in the network optical domain. Rapid, accurate optical fault capability can be added to communication networks without requiring changes to existing light terminal elements and processing circuitry in the electrical domain.

Method and system for detecting optical faults within the optical domain of a fiber communication network

A method and system for transporting ancillary network data is provided. A sub-carrier modulation signal containing ancillary network data is superimposed on a high bit-rate data signal prior to transport over an optical link. The monitoring subcarrier signal is significantly lower in both frequency and amplitude than the main data signal so as to not impact reliable reception of the main data signal. A low-pass filter filters the sub-carrier modulation signal from the data signal. By demodulating the sub-carrier signal, the ancillary network data is recovered. The ancillary network data includes any combination of data type information related to different network elements. The recovered ancillary network data is useful for any network management purpose. Especially important applications include restoration, wavelength re-use and routing, and any other general network management operation.

Method and system for transporting ancillary network data

A servo technique for concurrently providing wavelength locking and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) suppression in an external cavity laser. Respective wavelength locking and SBS suppression signals are generated by a controller and combined into a composite drive signal. The composite drive signal is used to drive an optical path length adjustment element to modulate the optical path length of the laser cavity. The wavelength locking and SBS suppression portions of the drive signals produce concurrent modulations of the laser optical path length having different modulation frequencies and causing different frequency (wavelength) excursions. These modulations produce corresponding wavelength and intensity amplitude modulations in the laser's output. A feedback signal indicative of the intensity amplitude modulations is filtered to attenuate the portion of the signal due to the SBS suppression modulation, and is received as a tuning feedback signal by the controller. In response, the control provides a tuning adjustment signal to adjust the frequency of the laser.

Servo technique for concurrent wavelength locking and stimulated brillouin scattering suppression

A system and method for photonic facility and line protection switching in an optical network to permit fault tolerant operation. The optical network comprises components whose operation is monitored by a controller. If the controller determines an optical transmission line in a signal path has failed, the controller will re-route the signal path through a spare, or protect component. Alternatively, the controller can re-route the signal path through a frequency translator and another optical transmission line.

System and method for photonic facility and line protection switching using wavelength translation

A transmission-based restoration system and method restores a failure of an optical pipe within an optical domain. Restoration occurs in the same domain in which the failed optical pipe is located. First and second optical pipe rings and a first plurality of optical switch platforms are deployed within a domain. The first optical pipe ring carries optical communication signals in first and second opposing directions around the first optical pipe ring. The second optical pipe ring carries optical communication signals in first and second opposing directions around the second optical pipe ring. Each optical switch platform is connected to the first optical pipe ring and the second optical pipe ring for switching the optical communication signals between the first and second optical pipe rings. When the first and second optical pipe rings both fail between adjacent first and second optical switch platforms, the first optical switch platform switches the optical communication signals carried in the first direction in the optical pipe ring to be carried in the second direction in the second optical pipe ring. The second optical switch platform switches the optical communication signals carried in the second direction in the first optical pipe ring to be carried in the first direction in the second optical pipe ring. Preemptive traffic, multiple domain switches, and redundant configurations are used.

Optical nonlinear effects, such as stimulated (Brillouin) scattering, cause disproportionate attenuation of transmitted optical signals and usually occurs only when the optical power exceeds a certain level. One of the most important types of nonlinear scattering which occurs in an optical fiber as the power of the optical signal is increased above a certain level is stimulated Brillouin scattering. Brillouin scattering limits the power density of an optical signal that can be injected into an optical fiber. This invention suppresses Brillouin scattering and, by so doing, permits the power density of the optical signal which is injected into an optical fiber to be increased approximately threefold before the Brillouin scattering threshold is reached. More specifically, in a lightwave AM-VSB CATV transmission system having an external modulator, the optical beam which is amplitude modulated with the CATV signals is also phase modulated with a sinusoidal signal having a frequency which is not less than twice the frequency of the highest CATV signal. The phase modulation of the optical beam suppress Brillouin scattering. With this invention the power density of the CATV signal can be increased approximately three fold before the threshold of Brillouin scattering is reached.
