A gas generator for an air bag according to the present invention comprising a cylindrical housing, an inner cylindrical member disposed inside the housing, a central cylindrical member disposed inside the inner cylindrical member, a gas generating agent packed in an annular space between the central cylindrical member and the inner cylindrical member and an ignition means for igniting the gas generating agent, wherein the ignition means comprises in turn a transfer charge disposed at one end of the central cylindrical member, an igniter for igniting the transfer charge and a fire transfer member disposed close to the transfer charge at a central portion of the central cylindrical member, and wherein the fire transfer member is constituted by a non-explosive material and comprises a stick-like member extending along almost the full length of the central cylindrical member. The gas generator for an air bag according to the present invention is provided with an ignition structure which can generate uniform ignition energy in a longitudinal direction thereof.

A stored gas inflator is formed by a pressure vessel including a gas port, a small chamber facing the gas port, and a main chamber situated adjacent to the small chamber and having a capacity larger than that of the small chamber. A high pressure gas is filled in the small chamber and the main chamber. A first partition closes the gas port, and a second partition separates the small chamber and the main chamber so that a burst pressure of the second partition is set to be lower than a stored gas pressure in the main chamber. A gas blasting initiator is mounted to the small chamber for applying burst pressure to at least one of the first and second partitions to allow the main chamber to eject the gas.

Stored gas inflator

A gas generating apparatus is provided which includes a plurality of combustion chambers and a filter chamber. The filter chamber contains a filter which includes a region which is not substantially heated by combustion gases generated by one combustion chamber and which receives combustion gases subsequently generated in another combustion chamber. In this fashion, a high gas cooling efficiency is achieved. The gas generating apparatus has an upwardly-opening vessel-shaped base and a downwardly-opening vessel-shaped cup which when combined form an outer shell of combustion chambers. A filter cap is fixed to the upper side of the cup, thereby defining the filter chamber. A first combustion chamber is positioned outside a pipe through the base and a second combustion chamber is formed inside the pipe. A shim on the inner surface of the filter chamber prevents combustion gases emitted by one combustion chamber entering another combustion chamber.

A multi-unit pyrotechnic initiation system (2) includes two or more pyrotechnic initiators (4) molded into a base (16). Each initiator (4) preferably includes a body overmolded around an igniter (8). The retainers (6) of two or more pyrotechnic initiators may be formed together as part of a unitary substructure.

A dual stage airbag inflator is disclosed to include a housing having an exhaust chamber and multiple peripheral exhaust holes, two chemical chambers disposed within the housing and separately in fluid communication with the exhaust chamber and the exhaust holes, and two igniters respectively mounted in the chemical chambers and adapted for igniting respective gas generant materials in the chemical chambers separately for enabling generated gases to pass out of the first chemical chamber and the second chemical chamber to the outside of the housing via the exhaust chamber and the exhaust holes. There is no interference between different inflation gases that are produced at different times, and a one-way valve flap is used that assures the desired dual stage inflation effect.

Dual stage airbag inflator

A multi-level output inflator (10) for inflating an air bag in the event of a vehicle crash, comprising a housing, a wall section disposed in the housing to define separate primary and secondary combustion chambers (18,20) therein. A primary initiator (30) and primary propellant are disposed within the primary combustion chamber (18), and a secondary initiator (32) and secondary propellant are disposed with the secondary combustion chamber (20). The housing comprises a primary nozzle (22) in communication with the primary combustion chamber (18), and a secondary nozzle (32) in communication with the secondary combustion chamber (20). The primary and secondary initiators (30,32) may be fired separately, simultaneously, or in a timed sequence to inflate the air bag at different rates and levels depending on the nature of the vehicle crash. A method of assembling the components of the inflator is also described and covered.
