We test whether the use of an honesty priming task can help mitigate hypothetical bias in stated preference choice experiments (CE). Using a between-sample design, we conducted hypothetical and non-hypothetical choice experiments with seven treatments. Our results suggest that marginal willingness to pay estimates from hypothetical CE with an honesty priming task are not significantly different from marginal valuations from non-hypothetical CE. Values from both of these treatments are lower than those from three other hypothetical treatments, while values from the three non-hypothetical treatments are not significantly different from each other. Unsustainable consumption of energy and water by tourist accommodation will escalate if incremental global tourism growth and business-as-usual approaches continue. Guests use more than half of the energy and water at accommodation facilities and so have a partnership role to play in saving resources. Our study is the first to measure the impact of persuasive communication on guests’ resource consumption behaviour (energy and water use) and stay satisfaction. It used an innovative intervention based on interpersonal communication, sequential influence and eco-feedback. Guests’ (n = 759) consumption of electricity, gas and water was monitored at four fully self-contained cottages using smart meters, over a period of 304 days. The field of social psychology explores how a person behaves within the context of other people. The social context can play a substantive role in non-market allocation decisions given peoples choices and values extend beyond the classic market-based exchange institution. Herein we explore how social psychology has affected one aspect of environmental economics: preference elicitation through survey work. We discuss social representation, social isolation, framing through cheap talk, and commitment theory through an oath.

Consideration of future consequences and pro-environmental decision making in the context of persuasion and binding commitment

The purpose of this article is to illustrate the way in which the binding communication paradigm (Joule, Girandola, Bernard, in press) can serve to promote environmentally-friendly values and behavior. This paradigm stands at the crossroad of research conducted in both the fields of communication and of commitment. We will be describing 4 recent studies carried out in the south of France. The first study was conducted in a school, the second in a town, the third study aimed at encouraging environmentally-friendly behavior along the seacoast while the purpose of the fourth study was to promote recycling on highway rest areas.
