Over the past century an increasing number of human problems have come into the jurisdiction of the medical profession. This process has been termed the medicalization of society. We will examine core theoretical and empirical texts that examine this issue, especially the origins and consequences of medicalization. While we will read books and articles from several disciplines, the approach to this course remains ultimately sociological. This course will be organized as a seminar. Students are expected to have completed the readings and be ready to discuss them for each class. The class will be divided into two groups, and members of each group will be required to submit a 4 to 5 page reaction paper based on the readings every other week (for a total of five such papers). In addition, each student will research an aspect or case of medicalization, which will be presented to the class and handed in as a formal paper at the end of the term. In terms of grading, the following formula will be used: the reaction papers will count 30%, the presentation and class participation 20%, and the final paper 50%.

Evaluation and treatment of male and female pattern hair loss

The invention features a method of removing a hair, involving mechanically or chemically removing the hair to expose the follicle of the hair, and then treating the follicle to inhibit its ability to regenerate a hair. Removing the hair facilitates the uptake of a follicle-inactivating compound and thus allows for long-term inhibition of hair growth.

In follicular unit transplantation, the follicular unit is the exclusive element to be moved in the transplant. objective. To study the distribution of follicular units in the human occipital (donor) scalp. methods. Using digital photography, we counted in 50 patients the hair density, follicular unit density, and the proportion of 1-, 2-, and 3-hair units per square centimeter. We measured the median distance between the follicular units. All the data obtained was statistically analyzed. results. In the occipital (donor) scalp the number of follicular units per square centimeter ranges between 65 and 85, and the hair density ranges between 124 and 200. The proportions of the different hair groupings change according to the patient’s hair density. We have developed a mathematical model that can predict the number and the most probable distribution of 1, 2, and 3 hair groupings, based on the patient’s hair density. The distance between follicular units ranges from 1.0 mm to 1.4 mm. conclusion. Hair transplant surgeons can now predict the total number of follicular units to be obtained from any given donor strip. In addition, the proportion of 1-, 2-, and 3-hair follicular units can also be anticipated. Some variance is to be expected due to the lack of uniform density in the donor area.

A Mathematical Model for Estimating the Donor Size in Follicular Unit Transplantation

Hair loss is a common problem affecting both men and women. The most frequent etiology is androgenetic alopecia, but other causes of hair loss such as trauma, various dermatologic diseases, and systemic diseases can cause alopecia. The loss of hair can have profound effects on one's self esteem and emotional well-being, as one's appearance plays a role in the work place and interpersonal relationships. It is therefore not surprising that means to remedy hair loss are widely sought. Hair transplant surgery has become increasingly popular, and the results that we are able to create today are quite remarkable, providing a natural appearance when the procedure is performed well. In spite of this, hair transplant surgery is not perfect. It is not perfect because the hair transplant surgeon is still faced with challenges that prevent the achievement of optimal results. Some of these challenges include a limit to donor hair availability, hair survival, and ways to conceal any evidence of a surgical procedure having taken place. This article examines some of the most important challenges facing hair restoration surgery today and possible solutions to these challenges.
