Competitive advantage from IT in logistics: The integrated transport tracking system

Changes in the international economic scenario in recent years have made it necessary for both industrial and service firms to reformulate their strategies, with a strong focus on the resources required for successful implementation In this scenario, information and communication technologies (ICT) has a potentially vital role to play both as a key resource for re-engineering business processes within a framework of direct connection between suppliers and customers, and as a source of cost optimisation There have also been innovations in the logistics and freight transport industry in relation to ICT diffusion The implementation of such systems by third party logistics providers (3PL) allows the real-time exchange of information between supply chain partners, thereby improving planning capability and customer service Unlike other industries, the logistics and freight transport industry is lagging somewhat behind other sectors in ICT diffusion This situation is to be attributed to a series of both industry-specific and other factors, such as: (a) traditional resistance to change on the part of transport and logistics service providers; (b) the small size of firms that places considerable constraints upon investment in ICT; (c) the relative shortage of user-friendly applications; (d) the diffusion of internal standards on the part of the main providers in the industry whose aim is to protect company information, preventing its dissemination among customers and suppliers; (e) the insufficient degree of professional skills for using such technologies on the part of staff in such firms The latter point is of critical importance insofar as the adoption of ICT is making it increasingly necessary both to develop new technical skills to use different hardware and new software tools, and to be able to plan processes of communication so as to allow the optimal use of ICT The aim of this paper is to assess the impact of ICT on transport and logistics industry and to highlight how the use of such new technologies is affecting providers' training needs The first part will provide a conceptual framework of the impact of ICT on the transport and logistics industry In the second part the state of ICT dissemination in the Italian and Irish third party logistics industry will be outlined In the third part, the impact of ICT on the training needs of transport and logistics service providers - based on case studies in both countries - are discussed The implications of the foregoing for the development of appropriate training policies are considered For the covering abstract see ITRD E126595

The use of ICT by Logistics Service Providers and Implications for Training Needs: a Cross-country Perspective

Studies on the global express industry are few and far between in the academic literature. The purpose of this paper is to identify from the extant literature the variables and dynamics significant for this industry and present a survey of Indian express delivery service providers in terms of these variables and their inter-relationships to assess the state of the sector, its dynamics, problems, and growth opportunities. The Indian express sector generates approximately USD 1.6 billion of revenues, growing at about 20% per annum, and employs close to one million people. The sector is fragmented, consisting of about 2,500 players with a few large players capturing about 80% of the market. The survey shows that small firms perform poorly with respect to on-time delivery and reliability, breadth of services, geographic coverage, investments in assets and information systems, and integration of services. Exploring Relationships between Key Success Factors and Performance Metrics for Indian Express Delivery Service Providers

The arrival of the "5G" era has greatly promoted the development of drones in the express delivery industry. Whether drones can be fully integrated into the express delivery industry is a matter of stability. Based on fuzzy mathematics theory, this paper mainly uses the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method to propose a new, quantitative evaluation method for the stability of the UAV during the climb phase. In the process of fuzzy evaluation, the design of weights is an extremely important content. This paper combines the analytic hierarchy process with larger subiective components and the entropy weight method with larger objective components. The weight is realized by the minimum relative information entropy theory Design optimization. The experimental results show that the stability evaluation algorithm designed in this paper has high accuracy and is consistent with objective facts, which can play a more profound role in promoting the development of the express delivery industry.

Evaluation of climb stability of UAV based on AHP-Enteopy Weight method

Le innovazioni connesse all’utilizzo tecnologie informative e della comunicazione (ICT) hanno caratterizzato il cambiamento nell’industria dei servizi logistici e di trasporto nel corso degli ultimi anni. In questo processo, la formazione e lo sviluppo di nuove competenze professionali assumono un ruolo sempre più centrale. Lo scopo di questo lavoro è di studiare l’impatto delle ICT sui fabbisogni formativi delle imprese logistiche attraverso l’analisi di alcuni casi di aziende operanti nel mercato italiano ed irlandese. Dai risultati è emerso un quadro caratterizzato da una scarsa sistematicità negli interventi formativi e nello sviluppo delle competenze professionali nell’area ICT. Solo alcune imprese di medio-grandi dimensioni adottano un approccio proattivo che riconosce il bisogno un costante aggiornamento delle skills professionali in ques’area.
