Phased Array Antenna Handbook

Past and present technological developments in microstrip antenna arrays are summarized. Emphasis is on exploring the potential of such arrays for satisfying the requirements of advanced military and commercial applications.

Microstrip array technology

This paper presents a historical development of phased-array antennas as viewed by the authors. Arrays are another approach to high-gain antennas as contrasted with reflector antennas. They originated a little over 100 years ago and received little attention at first. WWII elevated their importance through use in air defense. Since then, the development of computers and solid-state devices has made arrays a very valuable tool in radio-frequency systems. Radio astronomy and defense applications will continue to push the state of the art for many years.

Antenna Array Developments: A Perspective on the Past, Present and Future

A novel geometry, the geometry of Space-Filling Curves (SFC) is defined in the present invention and it is used to shape a part of an antenna. By means of this novel technique, the size of the antenna can be reduced with respect to prior art, or alternatively, given a fixed size the antenna can operate at a lower frequency with respect to a conventional antenna of the same size.

Space-filling miniature antennas

Antennas for use in mobile communication devices are disclosed. The antennas disclosed can include a substrate with a base, a top, a front side and a back side; a first conductor can be located on the first side of the antenna substrate; and a second conductor can be located on the second side of the antenna substrate. The conductors can have single or multiple branches. If a conductor is a single branch it can, for example, be a spiral conductor or a conducting plate. If a conductor has multiple branches, each branch can be set up to receive a different frequency band. A conductor with multiple branches can have a linear branch and a space-filling or grid dimension branch. A conducting plate can act as a parasitic reflector plane to tune or partially tune the resonant frequency of another conductor. The first and second conductors can be electrically connected.

High velocity aircraft, missiles, and rockets require conformai, thin antennas. Ideally, an antenna "paper thin" would best suit the aerodynamic and mechanical engineer. This antenna would neither, disturb the aerodynamic flow, nor would it protrude inwardly to disrupt the mechanical structure.
