Detail enhances the visual richness and realism of computer-generated images. Our stochastic modelling approach, called particle systems, builds complex pictures from sets of simple, volume-filling primitives. For example, structured particle systems have been used to generate trees and a grass-covered forest floor. Particle systems can produce so much irregular, three-dimensional detail that exact shading and visible surface calculations become infeasible. We describe approximate and probabilistic algorithms for shading and the visible surface problem. Because particle systems algorithms generate richly-detailed images, it is hard to detect any deviation from an exact rendering. Recent work in stochastic modelling also enables us to model complex motions with random variation, such as a field of grass blowing in the breeze. We analyze the performance of our current algorithms to understand the costs of our stochastic modelling approach.

Approximate and probabilistic algorithms for shading and rendering structured particle systems

A method is presented for representing botanical trees, given three-dimensional points and connections. Limbs are modeled as generalized cylinders whose axes are space curves that interpolate the points. A free-form surface connects branching limbs. "Blobby" techniques are used to model the tree trunk as a series of non-circular cross sections. Bark is simulated with a bump map digitized from real world bark; leaves are textures mapped onto simple surfaces.

Introduction The main goal of computer animation is to synthesize the desired motion effect which is a mixing of natural phenomena, perception and imagination. The animator designs the object's dynamic behavior with his mental representation of causality. He/she imagines how it moves, gets out of shape or reacts when it is pushed, pressed, pulled, or twisted. So, the animation system has to provide the user with motion control tools able to translate his/her wishes from his/her own language. Computer animation methods may also help to understand physical laws by adding motion control to data in order to show their evolution over time. Visualization has become an important way of validating new models created by scientists. When the model evolves over time, computer simulation is generally used to obtain the evolution of time, and computer animation is a natural way of visualizing the results obtained from the simulation.

Computer animation

Computational steering is a powerful concept that allows scientists to interactively control a computational process during its execution. In this paper, a survey of computational steering environments for the on-line steering of ongoing scientific and engineering simulations is presented. These environments can be used to create steerable applications for model exploration, algorithm experimentation, or performance optimization. For each environment the scope is identified, the architecture is summarized, and the concepts of the user interface is described. The environments are compared and conclusions and future research issues are given.

A survey of computational steering environments

A computational model of Lake Erie serves as a framework for a study of visualization techniques and display methods. Various display methods are used to examine the 3D data. The methods use primitive representations of polygons, volumes, lines and particles. The display methods also incorporate stereo imagery and animation. Three techniques of integrating the control of the computationl model and the display of images are discussed. These visualization techniques are post-processing, tracking and steering. A distributed software environment is used which implements these visualization techniques and display methods. The technique of steering is emphasized with a description of the software requirements and examples. A significant increase in productivity and comprehension is shown when steering is used.

A method for generating arbitrary terrain models, including trees, bushes, mountains, and buildings, is described. Procedure models are used to combine fundamental data elements in the creation of unified objects comprising the terrain model. As an example, a procedure model to generate arbitrary trees of various species is implementation. These are the generation of the low level data elements, specification of input parameter requirements, and a brief explanation of the algorithmic structure. Terrain images rendered by this process are included, as are diagrams and illustrations explaining the procedure model organization. Comparisons with previous work are made.
