In 1945 the authors reported the determination of cerebral blood. flow in man by the use of nitrous oxide in low concentration, a technique which permitted for the first time quantitative clinical measurement of this important physiologic function (1). Since that time numerous modifications have been made in the procedure (2) and the underlying theory has been subjected to extensive experimental evaluation. The present report constitutes a description of the technique as we have now employed it in over 300 determinations, an examination of its underlying theory and validity, and values obtained with its use in 34 studies on 14 normal young men.

Es handelt sich um den Sauerstoffverbrauch in situ, die Durchblutung und ihre Regulation, die arterio-venosen Differenzen von Sauerstoff und anderen Substanzen. Von anatomischer Seite liegen sorgfaltige Messungen uber die Capillarversorgung, Zellgrose und Zellzahl vor, von physiologisch-chemischer Seite zahlreiche neue Beobachtungen auf dem Gebiete des Gewebsstoffwechsels, sowie endlich von pathologisch- anatomischer Seite Befunde uber Entstehung, Lokalisation und Ausbreitung ischamischer Gewebsschaden. Im folgenden wird der Versuch unternommen, einen Teil dieser Ergebnisse unter einheitlichem Gesichtspunkt zu schildern und zu ordnen.

Effects of hyperthermia on cerebral blood flow and metabolism during prolonged exercise in humans

1. The effect of pentothal anesthesia was examined in 9 subjects on whom 19 observations were made. Blood was drawn simultaneously from the right and left internal jugular veins and the femoral artery in order to determine the right and left cerebral arteriovenous oxygen differences and the right and left cerebral blood flows, which were measured according to the method of Kety and Schmidt to calculate cerebral metabolic rate. When results from both right and left sides are averaged, the oxygen consumption of the brain in the unanesthetized man is 3.3 cc. oxygen/100 gm. of tissue/minute. This value, however, represents two groups: a higher one with 3.9 cc. oxygen/100 gm. of tissue/minute and a lower with 2.7. Because of the asymmetric venous return, the cortical component usually appears preponderantly in one of the two internal jugular veins and it is concluded that the portion of the brain with the higher metabolic rate is the cortex. 2.
