Continuous Adductor Canal Blocks Are Superior to Continuous Femoral Nerve Blocks in Promoting Early Ambulation After TKA
Seshadri C. Mudumbai,T. Edward Kim,Steven K. Howard,J. Justin Workman,Nicholas J. Giori,Steven T. Woolson,Toni Ganaway,Robert King,Edward R. Mariano,Edward R. Mariano +9 more
TL;DR: Adductor canal CPNB may promote greater early postoperative ambulation compared to femoral CPNBs after TKA without a reduction in analgesia, and future randomized studies are needed to validate the major findings.

Association Between Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Health Care Costs: The Veterans Exercise Testing Study.
Jonathan Myers,Jonathan Myers,Rachelle Doom,Robert King,Holly Fonda,Khin Chan,Peter Kokkinos,David H. Rehkopf +7 more
- 01 Jan 2018
TL;DR: In a model including historical, clinical, and exercise test responses, heart failure was the strongest predictor of health care costs, followed by CRF (P<.01), suggesting that efforts to improve CRF may not only improve health but also result in lower health care cost.

An ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca catheter technique does not impair ambulatory ability within a clinical pathway for total hip arthroplasty
Seshadri C. Mudumbai,Seshadri C. Mudumbai,T. Edward Kim,T. Edward Kim,Steven K. Howard,Steven K. Howard,Nicholas J. Giori,Nicholas J. Giori,Steven T. Woolson,Steven T. Woolson,Toni Ganaway,Alex Kou,Robert King,Edward R. Mariano,Edward R. Mariano +14 more
TL;DR: BMI affects postoperative ambulation outcome after hip arthroplasty, whereas the type of regional analgesic technique used does not, and an ultrasound-guided FIC technique offers similar analgesia with fewer side effects when compared with ITM.
Are Case Volume and Facility Complexity Level Associated With Postoperative Complications After Hip Fracture Surgery in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System
Jimmy K Wong,Todd Kim,Seshadri C. Mudumbai,Stavros G. Memtsoudis,Nicholas J. Giori,Steven K. Howard,Roberta Oka,Robert King,Edward R. Mariano +8 more
TL;DR: The observed-to-expected ratio (O/E ratio)—a risk-adjusted metric to classify facility performance—for major postoperative complications to assess the performance of VHA facilities was used.

Predicting Risk of 30-Day Readmissions Using Two Emerging Machine Learning Methods.
TL;DR: Two newer machine learning methods of risk prediction using 56 predictors from electronic health records data of 1778 unique HF patients from 31 hospitals across the United States are explored and two approaches boosted trees and spike-and-slab regression are used.
