A satellite radiotelephone frequency (fU,fD) can be reused terrestrially by an ancillary terrestrial network (Fig.1) even within the same satellite cell, using interference cancellation techniques. Moreover, the ancillary network can use a modified range of satellite band forward link frequencies (f'D) for transmission, to reduce interference with out-of-band receivers. A modified range of satellite band forward link frequencies that is used by the ancillary terrestrial network can include only a subset of the standard satellite band forward link frequencies to provide a guard band, can include power levels that monotonically decrease as a function of increasing frequency and/or can include two or more contiguous slots per frame that are left unoccupied and/or are transmitted at reduced maximum power. Time division duplex operation of the ancillary terrestrial network may also be provided over at least a portion of satellite band return frequencies.

Systems and methods for terrestrial reuse of cellular satellite frequency spectrum

Satellite radiotelephone system includes a space-based component (110), an ancillary terrestrial network, a monitor and a controller. The space-based component is configured to wirelessly communicate with radiotelephones (120a, 120b) in a satellite footprint over a satellite radiotelephone frequency band (fD, fU). The satellite footprint is divided into satellite cells in which subsets of the satellite radiotelephone frequency band are spatially reused in a spatial reuse pattern. The ancillary terrestrial network is configured to wirelessly communicate with radiotelephones in the satellite footprint over at least some of the satellite radiotelephone frequency band, to thereby terrestrially reuse the at least some of the satellite radiotelephone frequency band.

A high-speed transmitter and receiver are provided. In one embodiment, a transmitter comprises a baseband processor structured to receive data and to convert the data into a multiplicity of high and low signal values, with each high and low signal value having a first timing interval. A local oscillator generates a clock signal at a second timing interval and a digital circuit combines the high and low signal values with the clock signal to produce a transmission signal directly at a transmission frequency. A receiver is configured to receive the signal. Efficient usage of available spectrum is increased by logically dividing government licensed frequency channels into sub-channels, each of which can individually transmit a signal between a base unit and terminal The sub-channels are each offset from the center of the frequency channel by a unique offset amount to avoid interference Power control, sub-channel interference cancellation, and frequency control are employed to minimize the effects of out-of-band sub-channel signals on adjacent sub-channels Any given sub-channel can be dynamically configured to transmit voice or data signals Further spectral efficiency is realized using time division multiplexing on some or all of the sub-channels

A system and method for information content-independent synchronization with a received signal. A variable of the signal (e.g., average energy or magnitude) which is related to the energy distribution, is measured over a period of time. The signal's information bearing point is found at the point within the information period of the signal with the highest averaged energy. The point may be found, for example, by detecting the sample point with highest average energy, or by correlating multiple sample points to a stored template. Interpolation may be performed to locate an information bearing point that is between sample points. Because the relative energy content of the signal is effectively independent of the specific information content, synchronization with the information bearing point is accomplished without requiring the insertion of any special information content or fixed content patterns into the signal.
