A system and method for providing networked communication using a public safety answering point. In one embodiment, networked communications include providing access to an encrypted website, or page, that is customized for a particular emergency or security event. The website is accessible using an Internet address. In one embodiment, access to the website is subject to access control, such as a password. The website, and password, is available to dispatch operators and emergency response personnel in the field. In one embodiment, a participant can request bidirectional communications with an operator or with a predetermined user.

Techniques for controlling and managing network access are used to enable a wireless communication device to selectively communicate with several wireless networks. A portable communication device constructed according to the invention can communicate with different networks as the device is moved through the areas of coverage supported by the different networks. As a result, the device can take advantage of services provided by a particular network when the device is within the area of coverage provided by that network. Thus, the device can selectively switch to networks that provide, for example, high speed Internet access, different quality of service, low cost service and/or different services (e.g., voice, data, multimedia, etc.). A multi-mode controller in the device may be used to alternately poll different networks to determine whether the device is within the area of coverage of a network and to selectively establish communications with those networks.

A system is described for detecting at least one event of interest. The system comprises a detector, a programmable controller, and a network. Upon detection of an event of interest, the detector communicates that information to the programmable controller through the network. The programmable controller allows a user, who may be in diverse geographic locations, to control the detector.

The present invention provides a solution to the needs described above through a system and method for a wireless universal mobile product interface (WUMPI): Generally, products/objects have their own interface, or man-machine-interface (MMI). Technically, the wireless universal mobile product interface of the present invention (WUMPI) innovates this space by replacing the product's MMI by implementing reverse software control via wireless transmission channel and or Bluetooth wireless technologies to control the mobile device's screen - replacing the local software component on the mobile device which controls what is shown on the screen in terms of a man-machine-interface (MMI). This enables a product/object whithin the area of the mobile device to take over control via the wireless transmission channel or other wireless capability of the mobile device and to 'extend' the product interface to the mobile device that came withinn it's control range, or the product/object's personal area network (PAN).

Distribution and management of detected alarm signals using multiple communication channels for each of a plurality of authorized data recipients. Wired or wireless communication channels are used to transfer alarm notification messages and responses by the authorized data recipient. Responses include messages to cancel or confirm. Notification of receipt of an alarm response message is communicated to authorized data recipients via the multiple communication channels which may include a two-way pager, a cellular telephone or an e-mail address.

Remote notification of monitored condition

A server device has a programmable controller, a memory coupled to the controller, and a server program stored in the memory and executable by the controller. A first interface of the server device provides a first communication link to a portable telecommunication apparatus. A second interface connects the server device to an electronic utility device. The server program communicates with a client program in the portable telecommunication apparatus through the first interface. The server program also communicates with the electronic utility device through the second interface, so that digital information may be transferred between the portable telecommunication apparatus and the electronic utility device.

A portable telecommunication apparatus (200) has a user interface (250), a programmable controller (210), a memory (220, 230) coupled to the controller, and an information access program (240), such as a WAP browser, which is stored in the memory and is executable by the controller. The information access program provides access for a user to a global information network, such as Internet, through the user interface and a first wireless communication link. The apparatus also has an external device interface (260, 262, 264) for connecting an external device to the portable telecommunication apparatus over a second communication link. The information access program (240) allows the user to control the external device through the user interface (250), the external device interface (260, 262, 264) and the second communication link.

Portable telecommunication apparatus for controlling an electronic utility device

An encoded signal that comprises a plurality of received encoded signal values is received by using an error correction decoding technique to generate a plurality of decoded signals and one more decoded error detection signals. A correction value is generated that is representative of how much correction was performed by the error correction decoding technique to generate the plurality of decoded signals. The one or more decoded error detection signals are used to generate an error detection result. The decoded information signals are then alternatively accepted or rejected as a function of the error detection result and a comparison of the correction value with a threshold value.

server (6). Such a device can be used freely without being
dependent on modems and/or access points to the telephone
network.
