TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify two types of factors that influence the rate of creation of new firms; macroeconomic and microeconomic, and find that the macroeconomic climate that appears to be most conducive to the formation of small businesses is what might loosely be called sluggish.

Empirical evidence on strategic entry deterrence
TL;DR: For new products, firms attempt to limit entry through patent preemption and the creation of product loyalty through heavy advertising expenditures, while limit pricing is used much less often as discussed by the authors. But the practice of entry deterrence is surprisingly important to the firms involved.
