The desperate and dispossessed villains of Jacobean tragedy, as Jonathan Dollimore has argued, represent social and ideological forces in Stuart England; their tragic predicaments mediate contemporary dilemmas and anxieties. By representing social relations and political antagonisms onstage as problems of visual control, Jacobean tragedy engages in a radical critique of ideological formations. Taking its cue from Dollimore, this study contends that such ideological relations are presented in Lear as spatial relations, and that at stake in the analysis of ideological formations is scopic authority over bodies and territory, emblematized by the map of state that appears on stage in the first act. In an analysis of the language of discovery—as exposure, visual penetration, uncovering—that permeates Lear, this essay examines the persistent connection of territorial control, as an issue of scopic power, with the hermeneutics of invisibility articulated in the misogynist rhetoric of demonic possession. Such a dialectic of visuality, which thematically structures the play, connects Lear with contemporaneous debates about the status of visuality—debates over demonic possession and territorial representation. By demonstrating that King Lear depicts social alienation and political dissolution as spatial problems, this essay suggests that Shakespeare encodes a radical critique of kingship by representing the stage itself as the site of discovery and critique.

Angling in the Lake of Darkness: Possession, Dispossession, and the Politics of Discovery in King Lear

This thesis is a library and archive-based study within the field of historical anthropology It is concerned with one particular case of cross-cultural borrowing that occurred during the sixteenth century Spanish conquest of mainland North America; a process of imperial expansion that resulted in the establishment of several colonial provinces, which comprised all of present-day Mexico, Guatemala and some parts of the United States of America and were administratively dependent on the viceroyalty of New Spain The thesis focuses on the creation of the most northerly province within this territory, Nuevo Mexico, which - unlike other provinces in the Spanish overseas domains - had a social and political existence before it had an actual geographic embodiment Rather than the actual politico-geographic entity founded as a colonial "kingdom" in 1598, Nuevo Mexico is understood in this study as a "disembodied imaginary world," mainly consisting of the image of the Aztec ancestral homeland that Spanish conquerors and their Indian allies and/or subjects fabricated in the context of their colonial interaction Therefore the focus of this thesis is on the transformation of abstract, symbolic space into concrete, politically marked territory Through the semantic analysis of the term Nuevo Mexico and via reconstructing the process of its formulation and reification (1539-1598) I have explored issues of alterity, local knowledge, cultural hybridity and misunderstanding Part one of the thesis discusses the relevance of historical case-studies for anthropological theorisation on colonialism and the creation of culture It also provides an ethno-historical background for the area and people addressed in the thesis and displays the chain of events related to the exploration and conquest of Nuevo Mexico Part two argues against traditional interpretations of the colonisation of Nuevo Mexico as entailing the transplant of the European mediaeval imagery and proposes instead that it was the Nahua pre-conquest myths of origin what prompted the Spanish conquest of the area Finally, it discusses the complexity of cross-cultural interaction and the creation of culture in colonial contexts

Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines European writings about cannibalism in North America from 1492 until 1763, uncovering insights into the establishment and maintenance of imperial power. It contributes to existing scholarship about cannibalism, empire, gender history, and the history of sexuality. Imperial power depended upon the assertion of European superiority and the assumption of Indian inferiority, and the discourse of cannibalism played a key role in the establishment of these hierarchical determinations. Because imperial expansion always involved the conquering of bodies in addition to land and resources, it is imperative to acknowledge and scrutinize the way that conquered bodies were gendered. Cannibalism is an embodied act, and an investigation of the discourse of anthropophagy illuminates the development of early modern ideas about savagery, civilization, gender, and sexuality. Situated at the crossroads of history and cultural studies, this dissertation employs discourse analysis in order to reveal new insights into historical documents and to recenter gender in the study of the discourse of cannibalism. This comparative project traces the discourse of cannibalism in the context of Caribbean exploration, the Spanish empire in Mexico, the French empire in Canada, and the English empire in Atlantic North America, in order to develop an understanding of the ways in which the discourse of cannibalism changed across empires, time-periods, and geographic locations. This project compensates for the lack of scholarly attention that has been afforded to the study of cannibalism in North America. Ultimately, it uncovers some of the ways in which the

Henry O'Neill's narrative of first encounter in 1882 with
residents of the plateau south of the Rovuma (in Mozambique) constitutes
the earliest contribution to the written record on the area. By his
presence among and accounts of these people, O'Neill transformed regional
villains into victims awaiting British stewardship. This article portrays
those O'Neill met on the plateau as more complex historical subjects
who brought to the encounter their own fears, aspirations, and strategic
agendas. Whereas the writings of the Subaltern Studies Group provide the
author with a useful point of departure, the article critiques Subaltern
Studies' excessive focus on textual readings, turning instead to the
accounts of contemporary descendants of history's silenced subjects to
construct an alternative narrative.

Villains, Victims, or Makonde in the Making?: Reading the Explorer Henry O'Neill and Listening to the Headman Lishehe

This dissertation examines the patterns of health among the Salish, Pend d’Oreille, and Kootenai tribes living on the Flathead Reservation in the late 19th and early 20th century. Previous research on early Native American demographic and epidemiological patterns has essentially focused on patterns following European contact to the pre-reservation era, ignoring that Native populations continued to struggle with ill-health and disease under the control of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This research found while large infectious disease epidemics did not occur after the 1900s, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and pneumonia were the leading causes of death for all ages on the reservation. In addition, chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer began to emerge as causes of death. The importance of political and economic factors are stressed as ultimate causes of disease over biological or genetic factors.

New Spain (modemrn Mexico), duplicating the patterns of exploitation already developed in the central region of the colony. Surplus labor and goods extracted from the peasant economies of central New Spain were crucial for the development of the colonial economy. The pattern of settlement in compact communities facilitated the collection of tribute (head tax imposed on the Indian population) and the organization of labor drafts (repartimientos) for public works, the construction of churches, and labor in agriculture and the all-important mines. When the Indian peoples of central New Spain experienced rapid demographic collapse, civil and religious officials recreated spatially compact communities through the policy of congregaci6n, the resettlement of Indian populations into new communities.
