This book presents the first systematic appreciation of Ovid's extensive influence on, and affinity with, modern visual culture. Some topics are directly related to Ovid; others exhibit features, characters, or themes analogous to those in his works. The book demonstrates the wide-ranging ramifications that Ovidian archetypes, especially from the Metamorphoses, have provoked in a modern artistic medium that did not exist in Ovid's time. It ranges from the earliest days of film history (Georges Melies's discovery of screen metamorphosis) and theory (Gabriele D'Annunzio's fascination with the metamorphosis of Daphne; Sergei Eisenstein's concept of film sense) through silent films, classic sound films, commercial cinema, art-house and independent films to modernism and the C.G.I. era. Films by well-known directors, including Ingmar Bergman, Walerian Borowczyk, Jean Cocteau, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Fritz Lang, Max Ophuls, Alain Resnais, and various others, are analyzed in detail.

Ovid on Screen: A Montage of Attractions

This editorial is the consequence of a scarifying experience. I once was asked to deliver a lecture on animal care and welfare to members of one of Canada’s Humane Society branches. Faced with a large audience, to give myself and them time to adjust, after being introduced, I decided to focus their attention by asking them to answer a question: since my work deals mainly with fishes, I wanted to know how many of them were ‘sport’ fishers and would those of them who at least on some weekends fish by hook and line for recreation lift their hands? About 80% did so . . .Then I asked them whether or not they were ashamed, since what they were doing to fishes for recreation was much more deplorable than the use of laboratory animals. Was it not a double standard to oppose activities with animals that form only a very insignificant portion of human-to-animal interaction in comparison with millions of recreational fishers? I declared that I was sure they had not consciously decided to attack the less politically and economically powerful group of scientists, but that it very much looked as if such was the case. We all know, I pointed out, that politicians, if themselves not anglers, support recreational fishing in order to satisfy millions of voters, who travel to motels and camps, buy fancy fishing and camping equipment, vehicles, gasoline, boats, fishing licenses, and much more (e.g., Pearse 1988). It could be said that angling resembles tobacco smoking in being a pastime and an addiction that contribute enormously to the economy. At that point part of my audience started to leave in anger, evidently taken by surprise. Most remained, however, although clearly disturbed. When the time for questions came, several persons voiced angry disapproval of my ideas and departed, but the half of the audience that remained began a prolonged discussion with the admission that they had never thought about recreational fishing in that way. Together, we ended up attempting to solve mostly ethical problems.

Defending Fishes Against Recreational Fishing: An Old Problem to be Solved in the New Millennium

Werewolves, wings, and other weird transformations: fantastic metamorphosis in children's and young adult fantasy literature

This article examines witchcraft, shape-shifting and other supernatural beliefs among the Talensi and neighbouring Gur-speaking peoples on the frontier of the Northern Territories Protectorate of the Gold Coast (Ghana) in the first half of the twentieth century. Its starting point is the succession of religious movements dedicated to the eradication of witchcraft that swept through the southern forest region of the Gold Coast in the inter-war period. Most of these movements were animated by exotic deities originating in the savanna zone, a cross-cultural passage in part propelled by the ambivalence with which the Akan peoples of the forests viewed the so-called Gurunsi of the remote north. While the 'Gurunsi' were generally regarded as primitive barbarians, they were also seen to have an intimate relationship with the spiritual realm and therefore to be free from the ravages ofmalevolent witchcraft. This intimacy with dangerous spiritual forces was most clearly manifested in the widely reported ability of 'the grassland people' to transmogrify into animals. Evidence suggests, however, that far from being free from witchcraft, stateless savanna societies had their own problems with malevolent occult powers. Moreover, their reputation for shape-shifting was not simply a lurid, fantastic stereotype of northern brutishness on the part of the Akan. Animal metamorphosis Ð and especially the ubiquity of were-hyenas Ð was widely reported in the northern savanna, where it was imbricated with 'witchcraft' and with notions of personhood and collective identities. 
Cet article examine la sorcellerie, la metamorphose et d'autres croyances surnaturelles chez les Talensis et les peuples voisins de langue gour a la frontiere du protectorat des Territoires du Nord de la Cote de l'Or (Ghana) dans la premiere moitie du vingtieme siecle. Il prend comme point de depart la succession de mouvements religieux consacres a l'eradication de la sorcellerie qui s'est propagee rapidement dans la region forestiere du sud de la Cote de l'Or pendant la periode d'entre deux guerres. La plupart de ces mouvements etaient animes par des deites exotiques originaires de la savane, un passage interculturel en partie pousse par l'ambivalence avec laquelle les peuples akans des forets consideraient ceux qu'ils appelaient les Gourounsis des regions reculees du nord. Si les " Gourounsis " etaient certes generalement consideres comme des barbares primitifs, on les croyait egalement intimement lies au royaume spirituel et par consequent a l'abri des ravages de la sorcellerie malveillante. Cette intimite avec des forces spirituelles dangereuses se manifestait le plus nettement dans la capacite souvent rapportee des " peuples des prairies " a se metamorphoser en animaux. Les faits suggerent, en revanche, que loin d'etre a l'abri de la sorcellerie, les societes apatrides de la savane avaient leurs propres problemes avec les pouvoirs occultes malveillants. De plus, la reputation qu'ils avaient de pouvoir se metamorphoser n'etait pas un simple stereotype de la bestialite du nord, fait de fantasme et d'epouvante, de la part des Akans. La metamorphose animale (notamment le pouvoir d'ubiquite de la hyene-garou) a souvent ete rapportee dans la savane du nord, ou on lamelait a la " sorcellerie" et a des notions de personne et d'identites collectives.

NORTHERN GOTHIC: WITCHES, GHOSTS AND WEREWOLVES IN THE SAVANNA HINTERLAND OF THE GOLD COAST, 1900s-1950s

This study seeks to understand what kink is, exploring this question using narratives and experiences of gay and bisexual men who engage in kink in the UK. In doing so, contemporary understandings of the gay kinky subcultures in the UK are provided. It discusses the role of the internet for these subcultures, highlighting the use of socio-sexual networking sites. It also recognises the existence of kink dabblers who engage in kink activities, but do not immerse themselves in kink communities.
A qualitative analysis is used consisting of semi-structured in-depth interviews with 15 individuals who identify as part of a kink subculture and 15 individuals who do not. Participants were recruited through a mixture of kinky and non-kinky socio-sexual networking sites across the UK. Complimenting this, the author attended kink events throughout the UK and conducted participant observations.
The study draws on subcultural theory, the leisure perspective and social constructionism to conceptualise how kink is practiced and understood by the participants. It is one of the first to address the gap in the knowledge of individuals who practice kink activities but who do so as a form of casual leisure, akin to other hobbies, as well as giving due attention to the increasing presence and importance of socio-sexual networking sites and the Internet more broadly for kink subcultures. Community and non-community members were shown to possess similarities as well as distinct differences. The Internet was shown to play a significant role in all participants’ kink narratives.
The research calls for further explorations of different aspects of the UK kink subculture which recognises the important role of the Internet for kink practitioners in shaping both the offline and online kink communities. The study also calls for research related to kink practitioners who are not embedded within subcultural kink communities.
