We examined co-occurrence among five species of insect larvae that bore the stems of salt marsh cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora, in northwest Florida. Statistical analysis of 5400 stems at three different sites revealed fewer empty stems, more stems containing one species, and fewer stems containing two or more species than one would expect if individuals were arranged randomly and independently. Particular interspecific co-occurrences at individual sites were significantly rarer than expected for 6 of the 10 possible species pairs. This deficiency in species co-occurrences is likely a result of direct interspecific aggression and murder of larvae within stems, as demonstrated in labo- ratory experiments. However, we detected no obvious decreases in population densities or alteration of stem section occupancy patterns due to competition. Thus, although interspecific competition occurs, it does not play a critical role in structuring this community.

The species of Eupelmus (Eupelmus) Dalman and Eupelmus (Episolindelia) Girault (Chalcidoidea: Eupelmidae) in North America north of Mexico are revised. Illustrated keys are given to differentiate the three subgenera of Eupelmus and females and known males of 19 recognized species of E. (Eupelmus) and E. (Episolindelia). Five species are classified in E. (Episolindelia), including the three newly described species E. (Episolindelia) fuscipectus n. sp., E. (Episolindelia) grisselli n. sp., and E. (Episolindelia) varicauda n. sp., which are based only on females. Eupelmus rubicola (Ashmead), described originally from a unique male, is tentatively associated with females and is classified as E. (Episolindelia) rubicola n. stat. based on this association. Fourteen species are classified in E. (Eupelmus), including the four newly described species E. (Eupelmus) arizonensis n. sp., E. (Eupelmus) curticinctus n. sp., E. (Eupelmus) nitifrons n. sp., and E. (Eupelmus) pervius n. sp. Two Palaearctic species, E. (Eupelmus) stramineipes Nikol’skaya and E. (Eupelmus) microzonus Forster, are newly recorded from North America. Newly placed in synonymy under E. microzonus is E. (Eupelmus) insulae Masi n. syn. It is further suggested that E. (Eupelmus) nigricauda Nikol’skaya likely is also a junior synonym of E. microzonus. Information is also given on the identity of the Palaearctic names E. (Eupelmus) afer Silvestri, E. (Eupel- mus) martellii Masi, E. (Eupelmus) nubilipennis Forster, E. (Eupelmus) spongipartus Forster, and E. (Eupelmus) urozonus Dalman. A lectotype is designated for E. (Eupelmus) pini Taylor and under this name are placed in synonymy the Palaearctic names E. aloysii Russo n. syn., E. carinifrons Yang n. syn., E. sculpturatus Nikol’skaya n. syn., and Eupelmus suecicus Hedqvist n. syn. Four other new synonyms made are Eupelmus amicus Girault under E. (Eupelmus) cushmani (Crawford) n. syn., Eupelmus ficigerae (Ashmead) under E. (Eupelmus) dryorhizoxeni Ashmead n. syn., Eupelmus momphae Gahan under E. (Eupelmus) cyaniceps Ashmead n. syn., and Eupelmus quercus under E. (Eupelmus) cynipidis Ashmead n. syn. The subspecies Eupelmus cyaniceps scolyti Liao, described originally from China, is treated as E. (Eupelmus) scolyti Liao n. stat. and compared to E. (Eupelmus) formosae Ashmead. Eupelmus floridanus Howard is treated as a nomen dubium and the following 20 species are newly transferred from Eupelmus to other genera — Anastatus (Anastatus) ashmeadi (Melander & Brues) n. comb., Brasema aurata (Ashmead) n. comb., Brasema barda (Girault) n. comb., Brasema brevicauda (Crawford) n. comb., Brasema bruchivora (Crawford) n. comb., Brasema coccidis (Girault) n. comb., Brasema dryophantae (Ashmead) n. comb., Brasema flavovariegata (Ashmead) n. comb., Brasema fonteia (Walker) n. comb., Brasema juglandis (Ashmead) n. comb., Brasema lamachus (Walker) n. comb., Brasema limneriae (Howard) n. comb., Brasema macrocarpae (Ashmead) n. comb., Brasema neococcidis (Peck) n. comb., Brasema neomexicana (Girault) n. comb., Brasema rosae (Ashmead) n. comb., Brasema speciosa (Girault) n. comb., Brasema sphaericephalus (Ashmead) n. comb., Reikosiella (Reikosiella) biguttata (Girault) n. comb., and R. (Reikosiel- la) charitopoides (Girault) n. comb.

The species of Eupelmus ( Eupelmus ) Dalman and Eupelmus ( Episolindelia ) Girault (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) in North America north of Mexico

The superfamily Scarabaeoidea comprises a large and diverse monophyletic group. Members share ancestral characteristics, but often exhibit considerable differences in their ecology, physiology, or mating strategies. A large number of species are regarded as pests of crop or amenity plants, while others are beneficial to humans and even may be extremely rare as a result of anthropogenic activities. A significant number of chemical ecology-based studies have been conducted with the Scarabaeoidea in order to characterize semiochemicals influencing their behavior, such as pheromones and plant-derived allelochemicals. These may be used either to control or preserve populations of the beetles, depending upon pest or beneficial status. This paper is a review of the role and identity of the semiochemicals of the Scarabaeoidea, with comments on possible future research and applied opportunities in the field of chemical ecology.

Background The Ozark Mountains are a region with high endemism and biodiversity, yet few invertebrate inventories have been made and few sites extensively studied. We surveyed a site near Steel Creek Campground, along the Buffalo National River in Arkansas, using twelve trap types - Malaise traps, canopy traps (upper and lower collector), Lindgren multifunnel traps (black, green, and purple), pan traps (blue, purple, red, white, and yellow), and pitfall traps - and Berlese-Tullgren extraction for eight and half months. New information We provide collection records of beetle species belonging to eight families collected at the site. Thirty one species represent new state records: (Buprestidae) Actenodes acornis, Agrilus cephalicus, Agrilus ohioensis, Agrilus paracelti, Taphrocerus nicolayi; (Carabidae) Agonum punctiforme, Synuchus impunctatus; (Curculionidae) Acalles clavatus, Acalles minutissimus, Acoptus suturalis, Anthonomus juniperinus, Anametis granulata, Idiostethus subcalvus, Eudociminus mannerheimii, Madarellus undulatus, Magdalis armicollis, Magdalis barbita, Mecinus pascuorum, Myrmex chevrolatii, Myrmex myrmex, Nicentrus lecontei, Otiorhynchus rugosostriatus, Piazorhinus pictus, Phyllotrox ferrugineus, Plocamus hispidulus, Pseudobaris nigrina, Pseudopentarthrum simplex, Rhinoncus pericarpius, Sitona lineatus, Stenoscelis brevis, Tomolips quericola. Additionally, three endemic carabids, two of which are known only from the type series, were collected.

Five new species of Aphodius (dyspistus, tanytarsus, hubbelli, platypleurus, and pholetus), collected in the burrows of pocket gophers (Geomys pinetus Rafinesque), are described. Similarities between Florida and Great Plains pocket gopher burrow faunas are discussed, and reasons for the diversity of Aphodius in this habitat are postulated.

Languria erythrocephalus Blatchley has been little known since it was described in 1924. Larval hosts are maidencane, Panicum hemitomon, a native southeastern range grass and to a lesser extent paragrass, P. purpurascens, an introduced pasture species. Immature stages of L. erythrocephalus are described and the habits, natural enemies, and damage are discussed. The most important of several parasites were a braconid, Heterospilus languriae Ashmead, and a eupelmid, Eupelmus cyaniceps Ashmead.

Suppression of the Genus Roplisa Casey with Notes on the United States Species of Trigonopeltastes Burmeister (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)

Male antennae of Phyllophaga tristis (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) were tested using a coupled gas chromatograph-electroantennogram detector (GC-EAD) system for electrophysiological responses to five sex pheromones identified from other Phyllophaga species including L-valine methyl ester, L-isoleucine methyl ester, L-leucine methyl ester, methyl 2(methylthio)benzoate and methyl 2-amino benzoate. Male antennae responded only to methyl 2(methylthio)benzoate. In a 2003 field test near Greensburg, Kansas, cross-vane traps baited with rubber septa containing 1 mg of methyl 2-(methylthio)benzoate captured 466 male P. tristis. Control traps baited with rubber septa loaded with only hexane captured none. Similarly, in a field test in 2010 in Gainesville, Florida, 265 male P. apicata Reinhard were captured in traps baited with 1 mg of methyl 2-(methylthio)benzoate whereas control traps captured only a single male.
