Metasurfaces: From microwaves to visible

This paper discusses the theoretical modeling and practical design of millimeter wave reflectarrays using microstrip patch elements of variable size. A full-wave treatment of plane wave reflection from a uniform infinite array of microstrip patches is described and used to generate the required patch-design data and to calculate the radiation patterns of the reflectarray. The critical parameters of millimeter wave reflectarray design, such as aperture efficiency, phase errors, losses, and bandwidth are also discussed. Several reflectarray feeding techniques are described, and measurements from four reflectarray design examples at 28 and 77 GHz are presented.

Design of millimeter wave microstrip reflectarrays

An improvement to a recently reported theory for the analysis of the pattern and impedance loci of microstrip antennas is developed. It yields a theory which is simple and inexpensive to apply. The fields in the interior of the antennas are characterized in terms of a discrete set of modes. The poles corresponding to these modes are complex and depend on the losses in the antenna. The representation of the fields in terms of these modes is rigorous only for a bona fide cavity with no copper loss. The proper shift in the complex poles due to the addition of copper and radiative losses is approximated by lumping the latter two together with the dielectric loss to form an effective loss tangent. By so doing, it is found that the resulting expressions for impedance of the microstrip antenna are in good agreement with measured results for all modes and feed locations. The theory is applied to the evaluation of impedance variation with feed location, to multiport analysis, and to the design of circularly polarized microstrip antennas.

An improved theory for microstrip antennas and applications

Microstrip reflectarrays typically use tuning stubs on each element to adjust the phase of the reflected field. The authors describe a new approach in which the need for tuning stubs is eliminated and phase control is achieved simply by adjusting the resonant length of the patch elements. The advantages of this approach are described, as are a full-wave analysis technique for computing the phase of the reflected field as a function of patch size and a design curve giving the change in patch size for a desired reflected field phase shift.<

A passive array of resonantly-dimensioned microstrip antenna radiator patches are closely spaced (i.e., less than one-tenth wavelength) above a ground plane and individually associated with transmission line segments terminated so as to cause the overall array to receive an incident r.f. electromagnetic field, to convert the received field into r.f. electrical currents which flow along the transmission lines and are absorbed by the terminations or reflected therefrom. In the latter case, the reflected r.f. energy is re-transmitted in a predetermined direction as a re-directed r.f. electromagnetic field. The presently preferred embodiment is a relatively thin, flexible and thus conformable layered structure formed by selectively etching conductive material from one side of a metallically cladded dielectric sheet. For satellite communication, a flat reflectarray may be associated with a primary r.f. transmitter/receiver structure disposed at a focal area or spot of the reflectarray having an appropriately phased aperture (e.g., parabolic). For radar cross-section enhancement or reduction, the reflectarray aperture is phased so as to retro-reflect incident r.f. fields or so as to scatter, otherwise misdirect or absorb (e.g., by using lossy resistive transmission line terminations) the incident r.f. field.

A compact, easy to manufacture quarter-wavelength microstrip element especially suited for use as a mobile radio antenna has performance which is equal to or better than conventional quarter wavelength whip-type mobile radio antennas. The antenna is not visible to a passerby observer when installed, since it is literally part of the vehicle. The microstrip radiating element is conformal to a passenger vehicle, and may, for example, be mounted under a plastic roof between the roof and the headliner.

A microstrip antenna structure formed from a unitary conducting surface separated from a ground plane by a dielectric film where the r.f. radiator and feedlines form a generally planar arrangement of unitary integrally formed electrical conductors. The r.f. radiators are fed from an outside edge to selectively produce linearly and/or circularly polarized radiation at a selected resonant frequency(s). Necessary fixed phase shifting circuits are integrally formed by printed circuit techniques in the generally planar arrangement of electrical conductors for the circularly polarized radiators. A plurality of such antenna elements are also formed into a phased antenna array to achieve substantially ideal array gain thus producing an extremely high gain antenna with inexpensive printed circuit board construction techniques. Furthermore, appropriately controlled phase shifting networks may be integrally formed within the generally planar array of electrical conductors in combination with switchable diode elements to achieve any desired relative phase shifts between the array elements and thus to steer the array beam in a desired direction.
