Purpose – The underlying objective of this literature review was to investigate what kinds of semiotics researches have been employed in user interfaces design and usability evaluation, and how were they employed.Design/methodology/approach – This research follows a systematic literature review process that consists of three key stages: planning the review, conducting the review, and reporting the review. Starting with an initial set of about 1,000 research articles, 65 were selected for this review, using an inclusion and exclusion criteria. Qualitative and quantitative data were extracted from the selected literatures following a data extraction strategy in six themes of data extraction. The extracted data were synthesized to formulate the stated research questions to obtain the review goals.Findings – This systematic review identified research strengths, gaps, and challenges. Conceptualizing Workarounds : Meanings and Manifestations in Information Systems Research

Post analyses of major extreme events reveal that information sharing is critical for an effective emergency response. The lack of consistent data standards in the current emergency management practice however serves only to hinder efficient critical information flow among the incident responders. In this paper, we adopt a theory driven approach to develop a XML-based data model that prescribes a comprehensive set of data standards for fire related extreme events to better address the challenges of information interoperability. The data model development is guided by third generation Activity Theory and semiotics theories for requirement analyses. The model validation is achieved using a RFC-like process typical in standards development. This paper applies the standards to the real case of a fire incident scenario. Further, it complies with the national leading initiatives in emergency standards (National Information Exchange Model).

Data Model Development for Fire Related Extreme Events - An Activity Theory and Semiotics Approach

A semiotic framework (Semiotic Interface sign Design and Evaluation SIDE) was developed for user-intuitive interface sign design and evaluation. Examples of signs are small images, navigational links, buttons and thumbnails, with which users interact with web UIs. This paper presents an assessment of the SIDE framework. The focus is on (i) the quality of the SIDE framework for evaluation of interface signs, and (ii) the contributions of the SIDE framework from an evaluator perspective. Two empirical user studies were carried out, involving 23 participants. Data was collected via interviews, problem-solving assignments and feedback questionnaires, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative analyses. The study shows that the SIDE framework is applicable to designing and evaluating interface signs and helps improve the intuitiveness of interface signs.

Research methods and data analysis

The success of information system development projects is critically dependent on arriving at a shared understanding of the desired outcome by all project stakeholders. To communicate such understanding among stakeholders, development artifacts such as design specifications, prototypes, and user stories are created. This paper presents a new project management tool to measure and ensure common understanding of such development artifacts. The method is based on Peirce’s theory of semiotics and Mayer’s theory of learning. The application of the method is demonstrated using a brief example.
