Interoperability framework for subsea sensors data

Substandard performance between information systems and applications remains a problem for the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) sector leading to significant economic, social and environmental costs. The sector suffers from poor interoperability because it lacks a holistic ecosystem for exchanging data and information. Through qualitative research involving AECO sector industry partners’ views and opinions, this research extends understanding of issues which affect ecosystem interoperability in the AECO sector. Research questions guided a literature review, survey, semi-structured interview, focus group meeting, and interpretation of the results. The authors believe that incorporating AECO sector industry partners' views is essential for meaningful proposals to emerge. Open questions asked of industry partners received candid responses and confirmed key issues including: the need for the Industry Foundation Class (IFC) to be fully interoperable; the side effects and impacts of vendor lock-in; integration problems caused by multiple Common Data Environments (CDEs); handover data and information challenges; the impacts of poor interoperability on sustainable development. Through engagement with industry this research offers better understanding of interoperability challenges in the AECO sector and has generated more meaningful actions and solutions capable of improving the sector’s data and information ecosystem.

Ecosystem interoperability for the architecture, engineering, construction & operations (AECO) sector

This study proposes the Sustainability-Aligned Digital Integration Model for Geotechnical-Related Engineering Disciplines in Türkiye (SDIM–Geo–TR) as a roadmap for sustainable digital transformation. Built on a four-stage methodology—global technology mapping, national contextualization, criteria definition, and phased integration—the model synthesizes emerging technologies such as GIS, BIM, UAV, IoT and Digital Twin into a maturity framework. It illustrates how digital adoption in Türkiye has evolved from early GIS use to more integrated multi-technology ecosystems but remains hampered by interoperability gaps, skill shortages and cost constraints. SDIM–Geo–TR organizes this evolution into four maturity stages and assesses progress using sustainability impact, technical feasibility, data compatibility, cost effectiveness and adoption level. The findings highlight that achieving fully integrated digital geotechnical practice requires coordinated policy interventions, standardization efforts and capacity building. By aligning international best practices with Türkiye-specific drivers, the model offers a practical roadmap for guiding sustainable and digitally enabled geotechnical engineering. 

Sustainable Digital Transformation in Geotechnical-Related Engineering Disciplines: An Integrated Framework for Türkiye

Abstract The adoption of Digital Twins (DTw) related technologies in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) sector has enhanced data-driven decision-making through bi-directional data flows and real-time analytics. However, the risk of creating new data silos and interoperability hurdles with other technologies and initiatives persist. To unlock the full potential of DTw, integration with broader digital initiatives – such as Digital Building Logbooks and Digital Product Passports – is essential. Addressing these challenges requires a System-of-Systems (SoS) approach and coordinated processes. This research explores the transition towards a SoS approach in the built environment sector. A qualitative methodology was employed, using co-creation workshop with industry professionals, software providers, and academic experts from diverse regions. The data gathered were analyzed using grounded theory, leading to the development of a scalable framework for DTw solutions. This study introduces the Define-Wire-Engineer-Leverage-Transfer (DWELT) framework, designed to support organizations in effectively implementing DTw through a SoS approach.

Design Wire Engineer Leverage and Transfer (DWELT) Framework for Building-Level Digital Twins

Goal: Industrial operations are complex, and data sensors assure safety and reliable information for production improvements. Multiple stakeholders can take advantage of data acquisition for post-analysis and process control. Providing users and systems with friendly access to operating data is fundamental to the digital transition in the industry 4.0 scenario. Linking data and systems over ontologies and Industry Foundation Classes will boost supply chain performance in many layers. This paper presents the concept of valid data points over Uniform Resource Identifiers for sensor time-series into triples stores via Application Programming Interfaces.
Design/Methodology/Approach: A streaming data source approach to integrating industrial sensor data and sharing it via Uniform Resource Identifiers is developed and tested using Node-Red with multiple data connection types, such as the Industry Foundation Classes and open-source time series databases.
Results: The detailed proof of concept presented valid the feasibility of sharing sensor data via Uniform Resource Identifiers. The findings provide a backbone of a system able to interop Message Queuing Telemetry Transport data, Resource Description Framework datasets and Industry Foundation Classes schema.
Limitations of the investigation: The system envisaged was tested using simulated data. However, it is expected to have similar results from real data use. Nevertheless, more research will be needed to implement more features, such as three-dimensional object integration.
Practical implications: The solution designed and tested presented can be used in practice for companies that desire to expand via linked data shareability and interoperability. Also, researchers can advance the solution for specific features, such as creating an open-source data query and manipulation language.
Originality/Value: This paper examines future deployments of systems-to-systems interoperability targeting user-friendly data shareability. It is meant to be useful for industrial and academic developments.

This research proposes recommendations that could improve interoperability in the architecture, engineering, construction and operations (AECO) sector, by connecting domains, building lifecycles, and software systems with each other and the web. The objective has been to identify methods that promote evolution from file-based formats by advancing object-based data exchange solutions. The research design is a mapping of standards and systems that have affected the nature of object-based data exchanges, and which have either been proposed or implemented in AECO and the Oil & Gas sector. This is an approach which allows for the range and diversity of information to be examined. A review of the Oil & Gas sector confirms a norm where object-based, rather than file-based, transactions have shaped data exchange models, formats, use case methodologies, and collaboration mechanisms, thus contributing towards semantic connectivity across its diverse systems. Key research questions address the nature of these sectors, the promise that object-based data exchange offers, and examine recommendations that would improve standards and systems. The paper affirms that measures taken to improve interoperability in the Oil & Gas sector have relevance for the AECO sector, and that better understanding, and recognition of the structure of AECOs interoperability ecosystem is central to effecting lasting and significant change. Thus, we make recommendations that acknowledge the hybrid nature of AECO data exchanges and propose an interoperability ecosystem that connects both distributed and centralised federated models. Improved standards to define application programming interfaces (APIs) and adaptors, based on a modular approach, would be central to this proposal. We also make recommendations to improve use case definitions, and to ensure that semantic connectivity at the object level is scalable to web-based transactions. Finally, we assert that, to realise these changes, the developers and vendors of its systems should recognise and address the AECO sector’s pressing needs and concerns.
