An amount of time that air has been delivered from an air handler to a space is tracked, and based on the tracked amount of time, at least one turn-on time or one turn-off time of the delivery of air from the air handler to the space is controlled. Other features relate, among other things, to controlling a replacement air vent, and to user interfaces.

Damper control in space heating and cooling

A data center has equipment racks in which electronic equipment is disposed and a climate control system that includes a computer room air conditioner (CRAC) and an air economizer. The climate control system includes a control module that controls the climate control system. The control module determines whether outside air is suitable for use in cooling the data center based on the dry bulb temperature and humidity of the outside air. If the outside air is not suitable for, only the CRAC is used to cool the data center. If the outside air is suitable for use, outside air and not the CRAC is used to cool the data center when the dry bulb temperature of the outside air is below a minimum outside air dry bulb temperature set point. The outside air is conditioned before it is introduced as supply air into the data center so that the supply air is above a minimum temperature. If the outside air is suitable for use and the dry bulb temperature of the outside air is above the minimum outside air dry bulb temperature set point, the control module determines a cooling percentage of cooling of the data center to be provided by the CRAC and a cooling percentage to be provided by the outside air, where the percentage can range from zero percent to one-hundred percent. The control module then controls the climate control system so that the CRAC and outside air provide cooling of the data center according to their respective determined cooling percentages.

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for controlling the fresh-air, input-air, exhaust-air, waste-air and return-air flows, as well as the air pressure in the input-air duct and the air pressure in the exhaust-air duct, in an air-conditioning system which comprises at least input-air and waste-air flow meters (6, 20), input-air and exhaust-air pressure meters (12, 19), an input-air fan (5) with its air-flow control (13), a waste-air or exhaust-air fan (18) with its air-flow control (14), a fresh-air flow meter (15), a heat recovery exchanger (4), closing and control mechanisms for exhaust air and return air, coupled together as an outlet-air mechanism (10), and closing and control mechanisms for fresh air and fresh-air bypass, coupled together as an intake-air mechanism (3). The controls (13, 14) work together, and they have been fitted to act on the fans (5, 18) and mechanisms (3, 10) so that a change in one of the quantities measured will cause the adjustment of some air flow and/or mechanism (3, 10) so that the ratio (A/B) or difference (A-D) of certain air flows will be at the predetermined value, or/and that the bypass flow (F) will open or close.

Method and apparatus for the control of air flows and pressures in air-conditioning

A control system for controlling an air handling unit. The control system links the position of an exhaust air damper and a recirculation air damper so as the exhaust air damper is opened, the recirculation air damper is closed the same amount, and vice versa. An outside air damper remains completely open at all times. The relative positions of the exhaust air damper and the recirculation air damper control the amount of outside air that is emitted into the air handling unit through the outside air damper. For each of the control states of heating with minimum outside air, cooling with outside air, mechanical cooling with maximum outside air, and mechanical cooling with minimum outside air, the outside air damper remains completely open, and the position of the exhaust air damper and the recirculation air damper are controlled based on a particular state. Sequencing strategies are employed for transitions between the control states that utilize these positions of the dampers.

A fan control system suitable for use in air moving applications has a pressure sensor responsive to an air pressure in an air duct for supplying a static pressure signal representative of the air pressure. A supply air flow sensor is responsive to an air flow in a supply air duct and supplies a supply air flow signal representative of the air flow in the supply air duct. A return air flow sensor is responsive to an air flow in a return air duct and supplies a return air flow signal representative of the air flow in the return air duct. A supply fan moves air in the supply air duct. The supply fan is driven by a supply fan motor. A return fan moves air in the return air duct. The return fan is driven by a return fan motor. A unitary volumetric air flow controller is connected to the supply fan motor and to the return fan motor. The air flow controller selectively applies a supply drive power signal to the supply fan motor to energize the supply fan motor, and selectively applies a return drive signal to the return fan motor to energize the return fan motor. The power drive signals are responsive to the static pressure signal, supply air flow signal, and return air flow signal.

A variable air volume ventilation system (10) is disclosed in which the output air flow from a supply fan (13), delivered through a supply duct (11) to various places within a building, is returned by a return duct (15) through a return fan (17) and then through a connecting duct (18) back to the inlet (20) of the supply fan (13). The static pressure in the supply duct (11) is sensed by a static pressure sensor (40), and the output signal indicative of pressure is used by a variable frequency power supply (44) to provide power to drive the fan motors (36, 37) at a frequency inversely proportional to the difference between the sensed static pressure and a desired static pressure, thereby adjusting the flow through the ventilation system to match demand. Outside make-up air is provided through an outside air duct (50) and is fed into the return duct (15) at a position (52) near the inlet (16) of the return fan (17). The air flow through the outside air duct is controlled to a constant flow rate which matches the expected rate of exhaust air from the building so that the flow of air into and out of the building is balanced despite changes in the rate of flow through the ventilating system in response to demand.
