A stripline kicker operates as two coupled transmission lines, with two TEM operating modes, known as odd and even modes. The characteristic impedance of these two modes is generally different, both only tend to the same value either when the electrodes are widely separated or when the electrodes are very close to the beam pipe wall. In all other cases, the even mode characteristic impedance is always higher than the odd mode characteristic impedance. The specifications required for a kicker operating in a low emittance ring are usually very challenging. In this situation it is desirable to match the even mode characteristic impedance of the striplines to the resistance of their termination. However a mismatched odd mode impedance can significantly influence the striplines performance. This paper presents predictions for the influence of the odd mode characteristic impedance upon the contribution of each field component, electric and magnetic, to the deflection angle. In addition, the variation of the characteristic impedance and field homogeneity with frequency are presented.

Simulation of storage ring injection of HLS II

In this paper we present a proof to show that there exists no system of linear or nonlinear optics which can simultaneously close multiple local orbit bumps and dispersion through a single beam transport region. The second combiner ring in the CLIC drive beam recombination system, CR2, is used as an example of where such conditions are necessary. We determine the properties of a lattice which is capable of closing the local orbit bumps and dispersion and show that all resulting solutions are either unphysical or trivial.

Residual Dispersion in a Combiner Ring

The emittance growth in the betatron collimation system of the 27 km long transfer lines between the CLIC damping rings and the main LINAC depends strongly on the transverse orbit jitter. The resulting stability requirements of the damping ring extraction elements seem extremely difficult to achieve. Position and angle feed forward systems in these long transfer lines bring the specified parameters of the extraction elements within reach. The designs of the optics and feed forward hardware are presented together with tracking simulations of the systems.

Feed forward orbit correction in the clic ring to main linac transfer lines

A new method to generate ultrahigh-power microwave pulses compatible with mildly relativistic electron sources is proposed. This method involves a novel microwave compressor in the form of a metal helically corrugated waveguide, which can enhance the power of frequency-modulated nanosecond pulses up to the multigigawatt level. The results of the proof-of-principle experiments at kilowatt power levels are in good agreement with theory.

To achieve the design luminosity for the CLIC main beam an unprecedented degree of machine stability is required. Extremely stringent tolerances are placed on the damping ring extraction system in order to limit emittance growth along the ring-to-main-linac transfer line; particularly through the pre-linac betatron collimation system. In this paper we propose feed forward systems situated across the central arcs and turnaround loops of the transfer lines as an elegant solution to relax the damping ring extraction requirements as well as to significantly reduce emittance growth through the betatron collimation system. The optics for the beam position monitor and kicker regions are presented and the results of tracking simulations shown to verify the performance of the feed forward systems. As conventional RF accelerating schemes approach the physical limit of accelerating gradient, the accelerator community is increasingly looking at novel accelerating techniques to overcome these limitations. Moving from the RF to the THz frequency range, higher acceleration gradients of high energy beams can be achieved in compact structures. Beam dynamics studies are crucial as part of the design of novel accelerating structures to maximise the output beam current as well as the accelerating gradient. In this paper we present beam dynamics simulations through dielectric lined waveguide structures using novel techniques to simulate broadband signals for particle tracking studies in RF-Track. The beam parameters through the structure are optimised and we study the dynamics of general broadband accelerating structures.

Beam Dynamics Studies Through Dielectric THz Accelerating Structures

In this work, we apply multi-objective optimization methods to single-cell cavity models generated using non-uniform rational basis splines (NURBS). This modeling method uses control points and a NURBS to generate the cavity geometry, which allows for greater flexibility in the shape, leading to improved performance. Using this approach and multiobjective genetic algorithms (MOGAs) we find the Pareto frontiers for the typical key quantities of interest (QoI) including peak fields, shunt impedance and the modified Poynting vector. Visualizing these results becomes increasingly more difficult as the number of objectives increases, therefore, in order to understand these frontiers, we provide several techniques for analyzing, visualizing and using multidimensional Pareto fronts specifically for RF cavity design.
