The advances in wireless communication, microelectronics, digital electronics, and highly integrated electronics and the increasing need for more efficient controlled electric systems make the development of monitoring and supervisory control tools the object of study of many researchers. This paper proposes a digital system for energy usage evaluation, condition monitoring, diagnosis, and supervisory control for electric systems applying wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with dynamic power management (DPM). The system is based on two hardware topologies responsible for signal acquisition, processing, and transmission: intelligent sensor modules (ISMs) and remote data acquisition units (RDAUs). The gateway function of the wired network is carried out by remote servers (RSs) based on the Soekris architecture, which is responsible for receiving the data collected and transmitting it to the supervisory controller (SC). To extend the WSN lifetime, sensor nodes implement a DPM protocol. The basic characteristics of the presented system are the following: 1) easy implementation; 2) low-cost implementation; 3) easy implementation of redundant routines (security); 4) portability/versatility; and 5) extended network lifetime.

Monitoring in Industrial Systems Using Wireless Sensor Network With Dynamic Power Management

As mobile phones become popular, with many people being able to afford them, the demand for mobility is extended to teaching and learning purposes. One recent and significant change in learning environments is the demand for mobility. We introduce a proposed framework of mobile learning. It consists of four functional levels: (1) mobile learning applications, (2) mobile user infrastructure, (3) mobile protocol and (4) mobile network infrastructure. The framework can simplify the design and development so that different parties (e.g. vendors, service providers, designers, developers) can address individual levels. A single party can build on functionalities provided by others. The functions of these four levels are described with some examples. Moreover, practical knowledge management and learning community are two major issues in mobile learning.

An initial assessment of cooperative action in Wi-Fi networking

Wireless LANs are becoming increasingly common in both home and office networks. Additionally, wireless Internet service providers have begun installing public WLANs in airports, hotels, and other frequently trafficked areas. This article analyzes deployment strategies for such networks, specifically for possible future systems utilizing bands of up to 60 GHz. A major part of the installation cost stems from network planning, wiring, and manpower for setting up base stations. It is therefore crucial to find ways to simplify the network installation and reduce the deployment costs, while at the same time maintaining the desired system performance. We show that even simple installation rules can often achieve adequate coverage results. However, proper network planning is in some situations necessary to achieve adequate coverage. Therefore, we examine different combinatorial optimization methods for obtaining close to optimal positioning of WLAN access points and compare the performance of the proposed algorithms to the simple installation methods. The optimization algorithms used in this article evaluate an objective function that aims to maximize both the coverage area and the overall signal quality over a discrete search space. Random search algorithms can yield very good solutions, but often exhibit difficult convergence properties. Successive removal algorithms, such as pruning, converge in polynomial time, but usually produce suboptimal solutions. We therefore propose a combination of the two approaches, using pruning to obtain an initial set of the base station positions and refining these by using neighborhood search or simulated annealing.

On the deployment of picocellular wireless infrastructure

This work discusses the evolution of W-LANs from their current status of wireless termination of LAN services to a possible global infrastructure where the access networks become open to multiple operators and a vehicle of a win-win scenario, where both users and operators benefit from the new network architecture. The idea of Open Access Networks (OANs) can go beyond wireless HotSpots and be generalized to a generic shared access infrastructure that fosters service operators competition and drastically reduces the cost of last mile coverage.The general concept of Open Access Networks is detailed, highlighting its difference with the more traditional model of vertical integration of the access network into the global service. About the OANs development, it is shown how to support the quick and smooth evolution of the infrastructure toward a widespread and reliable communication support.Business models are discussed by mentioning the different actors, the market organization and the different organization forms.The final part of the paper is devoted to technical challenges such as access control, security, privacy, roaming, resource exploitation and service differentiation. As an example of how to tackle these problems, we discuss a pricing technique devoted to resource management and billing support.In addition we present a simulation on how the OAN concept can speed-up the deployment of broadband access in a real case.
