Factors of collaborative working: a framework for a collaboration model.

Purpose – This paper aims to improve understanding of how to manage global network operations from an engineering perspective.Design/methodology/approach – This research adopted a theory building approach based on case studies. Grounded in the existing literature, the theoretical framework was refined and enriched through nine in‐depth case studies in the industry sectors of aerospace, automotives, defence and electrics and electronics.Findings – This paper demonstrates the main value creation mechanisms of global network operations along the engineering value chain. Typical organisational features to support the value creation mechanisms are captured, and the key issues in engineering network design and operations are presented with an overall framework.Practical implications – Evidenced by a series of pilot applications, outputs of this research can help companies to improve the performance of their current engineering networks and design new engineering networks to better support their global businesse...

Managing global network operations along the engineering value chain

An interdisciplinary review of literature relevant to collaborative design is used as a basis to propose a taxonomy for the classification of collaborative design situations. The taxonomy includes top-level attributes of team composition, communication, distribution, design approach, information, and nature of the problem. Three taxonomic-oriented measures are introduced and used to evaluate the taxonomy: orthogonality, completeness, and usability. This taxonomy is an initial step towards the creation of new agent-based collaborative support tools structured upon a fundamental understanding of the collaborative process with a theoretical foundation. More significantly, the taxonomy provides a valuable way of organising the research literature in collaborative design that is at present dispersed across many domains and disciplines.

Development of a systematic classification and taxonomy of collaborative design activities

The current paper proposes an integrating framework to present the essential elements of global engineering networks (GENs) from the perspectives of the context, capability, and configuration (3C). Using the 3C framework, three key patterns (efficient GEN, flexible GEN, and innovative GEN) of the leading practice have been identified. The research updates the concept of global engineering management for current business environments and aims to help researchers and practitioners to understand and manage dispersed engineering operations in dynamic environments. The framework is based on a literature review and refined by the empirical studies of a small number of companies in the aerospace, automotive, electrics, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. More in-depth studies across a wider range of industries would improve the validity and reliability.

Global engineering networks: The integrating framework and key patterns

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose an integrating framework for the configuration and performance of global engineering networks (GEN).Design/methodology/approach – The reported study is based on a comprehensive literature review and refined by the practice of three global leading companies along key industry sectors.Findings – This framework presents the key patterns of GEN from an evolution perspective and demonstrates the influence of the major driving forces.Research limitations/implications – In addition, this study also identifies research opportunities in two areas: further testing the theory of GEN with a broader range of industry sectors, and expanding the study to inter‐firm engineering activities. The further study is planned accordingly.Originality/value – The paper offers a systematic view of GEN and can help companies in the design and operation.
