TL;DR: Islamophobia creates a wide gap between Muslim women's perceptions of who they are and the ways in which they are viewed by the host society as discussed by the authors, which is particularly difficult for ethnic minority Muslim women who have chosen to identify publicly with the faith and wear the scarf as a badge of honour.
