Chandra X-ray observations of the nearby brightest cluster galaxy M87 resolve the hot gas structure across the Bondi accretion radius of the central s upermassive black hole, a measurement possible in only a handful of systems but complicated by the bright nucleus and jet emission. By stacking only short frame-time observations to limit pileup, and after subtracting the nuclear PSF, we analysed the X-ray gas properties within the Bondi radius at 0.12− 0.22 kpc (1.5− 2.8 arcsec), depending on the black hole mass. Within 2 kpc radius, we detect two significant temperature components, which are consistent with constant values of 2 keV and 0.9 keV down to 0.15 kpc radius. No evidence was found for the expected temperature increase within ∼ 0.25 kpc due to the influence of the SMBH. Within the Bondi radius, the density profile is consistent with ρ∝r −1 . The lack of a temperature increase inside the Bondi radius suggests that the hot gas structure is not di ctated by the SMBH’s potential and, together with the shallow density profile, shows that th e classical Bondi rate may not reflect the accretion rate onto the SMBH. If this density profi le extends in towards the SMBH, the mass accretion rate onto the SMBH could be at least two orders of magnitude less than the Bondi rate, which agrees with Faraday rotation measurements for M87. We discuss the evidence for outflow from the hot gas and the cold gas disk and f or cold feedback, where gas cooling rapidly from the hot atmosphere could feed the cirumnuclear disk and fuel the SMBH. At 0.2 kpc radius, the cooler X-ray temperature component represents ∼ 20% of the total Xray gas mass and, by losing angular momentum to the hot gas component, could provide a fuel source of cold clouds within the Bondi radius.

Inside the Bondi radius of M87

With a goal of searching for accreting intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), we report the results of ultra-deep Jansky Very Large Array radio continuum observations of the cores of three Galactic globular clusters: M15, M19, and M22. We reach rms noise levels of 1.5-2.1 μJy beam–1 at an average frequency of 6 GHz. No sources are observed at the center of any of the clusters. For a conservative set of assumptions about the properties of the accretion, we set 3σ upper limits on IMBHs from 360 to 980 M ☉. These limits are among the most stringent obtained for any globular cluster. They add to a growing body of work that suggests either (1) IMBHs 1000 M ☉ are rare in globular clusters or (2) when present, IMBHs accrete in an extraordinarily inefficient manner.

No evidence for intermediate-mass black holes in globular clusters: strong constraints from the jvla

We examine the consequences of a model in which relativistic jets can be triggered in quiescent massive black holes when a geometrically thick and hot accretion disk forms as a result of the tidal disruption of a star. To estimate the power, thrust and lifetime of the jet, we use the mass accretion history onto the black hole as calculated by detailed hydrodynamic simulations of the tidal disruption of stars. We go on to determine the states of the interstellar medium in various types of quiescent galactic nuclei, and describe how this external matter can affect jets propagating through it. We use this information, together with a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the structure of the relativistic flow, to study the dynamics of the jet, the propagation of which is regulated by the density stratification of the environment and by its injection history. The breaking of symmetry involved in transitioning from one to two dimensions is crucial and leads to qualitatively new phenomena. Many of the observed properties of the Swift 1644+57/GRB 110328A event can be understood as resulting from accretion onto and jets driven by a $10^6 M_\odot$ central mass black hole following the disruption of sun-like star. With the inclusion of a stochastic contribution to the luminosity due to variations in the feeding rate driven by instabilities near the tidal radius, we find that our model can explain the X-ray light curve without invoking a rarely-occurring deep encounter. In conjunction with the number density of black holes in the local universe, we hypothesize that the conditions required to produce the Swift event are not anomalous, but are in fact representative of the jet-driven flare population arising from tidal disruptions.

The dynamics, appearance and demographics of relativistic jets triggered by tidal disruption of stars in quiescent supermassive black holes

We present results from a 47 ks observation of the Andromeda galaxy, M31, using the High-Resolution Camera of the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. We detect 142 point sources spanning three orders of magnitude in luminosity, from $L_X = 2\times 10^{35} \rm erg s^{-1}$ to $L_X = 2\times 10^{38} \rm erg s^{-1}$ in the 0.1-10 keV band. The X-ray source location accuracy is better than $1\arcsec$ in the central regions of the galaxy. One source lies within $1.3\arcsec$ of SN 1885 but does not coincide with the UV absorption feature identified as the supernova remnant. However, there is an optical transient, which is likely an optical nova, at the location of the X-ray source. There is a weak source, $L_X \sim 4 \times 10^{36} \rm erg cm^{2} s^{-1}$, coincident with the nucleus of M31, and 14 sources coincident with globular clusters. 
Our observation has very high efficiency down to luminosities of $1.5\times 10^{36} \rm erg s^{-1}$ for sources within $5\arcmin$ of the nucleus. Comparing with a ROSAT observation made 11 years earlier, we find that $0.46 \pm 0.26$ of the sources with $L_X > 5 \times 10^{36} \rm erg s^{-1}$ are variable. We find no evidence for X-ray pulsars in this region, indicating that the population is likely dominated by low-mass X-ray binaries. The source density radial profile follows a powerlaw distribution with an exponent of $1.25 \pm 0.10$ and is inconsistent with the optical surface brightness profile. The x-ray point source luminosity function is well fitted by a differential broken powerlaw with a break at a luminosity of $(4.5^{+1.1}_{-2.2}) \times 10^{37} \rm erg s^{-1}$. The luminosity function is consistent with a model of an aging population of X-ray binaries.

A Chandra High-Resolution Camera Observation of X-Ray Point Sources in M31

Observational confirmation of hot accretion model predictions has been hindered by the challenge to resolve spatially the Bondi radii of black holes with X-ray telescopes. Here, we use the Megasecond Chandra X-ray Visionary Project (XVP) observation of the NGC~3115 supermassive black hole to place the first direct observational constraints on the spatially and spectroscopically resolved structures of the X-ray emitting gas inside the Bondi radius of a black hole. We measured temperature and density profiles of the hot gas from a fraction out to tens of the Bondi radius (R_B = 2.4-4.8 arcsec = 112-224 pc). The projected temperature jumps significantly from ~0.3 keV beyond 5 arcsec to ~0.7 keV within ~4-5 arcsec, but then abruptly drops back to ~0.3 keV within ~3 arcsec. This is contrary to the expectation that the temperature should rise toward the center for a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. A hotter thermal component of ~1 keV inside 3 arcsec (~150 pc) is revealed using a two component thermal model, with the cooler ~0.3 keV thermal component dominating the spectra. We argue that the softer emission comes from diffuse gas physically located within $\sim 150$~pc from the black hole. The density profile is broadly consistent with rho ~ r^{-1} within the Bondi radius for either the single temperature or the two-temperature model. The X-ray data alone with physical reasoning argue against the absence of a black hole, supporting that we are witnessing the onset of the gravitational influence of the supermassive black hole.

However, X-ray observations in 2006-2007 show M31* to be highly variable at times. A separate variable X-ray source is found near P1, the brighter of the two optical nuclei. The apparent angular Bondi radius of M31* is the largest of any black hole and large enough to be well resolved with Chandra. The diffuse emission within this Bondi radius is found to have an X-ray temperature ~0.3 keV and density 0.1 cm–3, indistinguishable from the hot gas in the surrounding regions of the bulge given the statistics allowed by the current observations. The X-ray source at the location of M31* is consistent with a point source and a power-law spectrum with energy slope 0.9 ± 0.2. Our identification of this X-ray source with M31* is based solely on positional coincidence.
