The synthesis, characterization, and proposed mechanism of formation of a new family of silicatelaluminosilicate mesoporous molecular sieves designated as M41S is described. MCM-41, one member of this family, exhibits a hexagonal arrangement of uniform mesopores whose dimensions may be engineered in the range of - 15 A to greater than 100 A. Other members of this family, including a material exhibiting cubic symmetry, have ken synthesized. The larger pore M41S materials typically have surface areas above 700 m2/g and hydrocarbon sorption capacities of 0.7 cc/g and greater. A templating mechanism (liquid crystal templating-LCT) in which surfactant liquid crystal structures serve as organic templates is proposed for the formation of these materials. In support of this templating mechanism, it was demonstrated that the structure and pore dimensions of MCM-41 materials are intimately linked to the properties of the surfactant, including surfactant chain length and solution chemistry. The presence of variable pore size MCM-41, cubic material, and other phases indicates that M41S is an extensive family of materials.

Global energy consumption is projected to increase, even in the face of substantial declines in energy intensity, at least 2-fold by midcentury relative to the present because of population and economic growth. This demand could be met, in principle, from fossil energy resources, particularly coal. However, the cumulative nature of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere demands that holding atmospheric CO2 levels to even twice their preanthropogenic values by midcentury will require invention, development, and deployment of schemes for carbon-neutral energy production on a scale commensurate with, or larger than, the entire present-day energy supply from all sources combined. Among renewable energy resources, solar energy is by far the largest exploitable resource, providing more energy in 1 hour to the earth than all of the energy consumed by humans in an entire year. In view of the intermittency of insolation, if solar energy is to be a major primary energy source, it must be stored and dispatched on demand to the end user. An especially attractive approach is to store solar-converted energy in the form of chemical bonds, i.e., in a photosynthetic process at a year-round average efficiency significantly higher than current plants or algae, to reduce land-area requirements. Scientific challenges involved with this process include schemes to capture and convert solar energy and then store the energy in the form of chemical bonds, producing oxygen from water and a reduced fuel such as hydrogen, methane, methanol, or other hydrocarbon species.

Initially, we will outline the different chemical classes of 2D materials and discuss the various strategies to prepare single-layer, few-layer, and multilayer assembly materials in solution, on substrates, and on the wafer scale. Additionally, we present an experimental guide for identifying and characterizing single-layer-thick materials, as well as outlining emerging techniques that yield both local and global information. Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities in Two-Dimensional Materials Beyond Graphene

The cluster [(Tp)MoFe(3)S(4)(PEt(3))(3)](1+) containing the cubane-type [MoFe(3)(μ(3)-S)(4)](2+) reduced core undergoes facile ligand substitution reactions at the iron sites leading to an extensive set of mono- and disubstituted species [(Tp)MoFe(3)S(4)(PEt(3))(3-n)L(n)](1-n) with L = halide, N(3)(-), PhS(-), PhSe(-), R(3)SiO(-), and R(3)SiS(-) and n = 1 and 2. Structures of 10 members of the set are reported. For two representative clusters, Curie behavior at 2-20 K indicates a spin-quintet ground state. Zero-field Mossbauer spectra consist of two doublets in a 2:1 intensity ratio. (57)Fe isomer shifts are consistent with the mean oxidation state Fe(3)(2.33+) arising from electron delocalization of the mixed-valence oxidation state description [Mo(3+)Fe(3+)Fe(2+)(2)]. Reaction of [(Tp)MoFe(3)S(4)(PEt(3))(2)Cl] with (Me(3)Si)(2)S affords [(Tp)MoFe(3)S(4)(PEt(3))(2)(SSiMe(3))], a likely first intermediate in the formation of the tricluster compound {[(Tp)MoFe(3)S(4)(PEt)(2)](3)S}(BPh(4)) from the reaction of [(Tp)MoFe(3)S(4)(PEt(3))(3)](BPh(4)) and NaSSiMe(3) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The tricluster consists of three cluster units bound to a central μ(3)-S atom in a species of overall C(3) symmetry. Relatively few clusters in the [MoFe(3)S(4)](2+) oxidation state have been prepared compared to the abundance of clusters in the oxidized [MoFe(3)S(4)](3+) state. This work is the first comprehensive study of the [MoFe(3)S(4)](2+) state, one conspicuous feature of which is its ability to bind hard and soft σ-donors and strong to weak π-acid ligands. Protein-bound iron−sulfur clusters and their synthetic analogues are characterized by tetrahedral metal sites, multiple oxidation levels, and exchange coupling. The recent attainment of several all-ferrous protein clusters and the presence of sulfide- and thiolate-bridged sites in the all-ferrous state of the nitrogenase P-cluster provides an imperative for determination of exchange coupling between tetrahedral Fe(II) sites with sulfur bridges. The cluster in the previously reported compound (Et4N)2[Fe2(SEt)6] is centrosymmetric with distorted tetrahedral coordination and a planar Fe2(μ-SEt)2 bridge unit. The compound is diamagnetic at 4.2 K, indicating antiferromagnetic coupling. The lower limit J > 80 cm-1 (H = JS1·S2) is obtained by Mossbauer spectroscopy. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility data affords J = 165 ± 15 cm-1.
