Purpose – Within the building sector a lack of clarity in terminology does not help designers, clients or researchers. Non-domestic buildings have shown rapid increases in the use of advanced technology and control systems with varying drivers, many of which are labelled as intelligent. The term smart has been used interchangeably with intelligent without any clear distinction between the two. If the term Smart Buildings represented a separate, more advanced grouping, it would provide an opportunity to focus the future progress of non-domestic building development. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Buildings across the world consume a significant amount of energy which is equivalent to one third of total primary energy resources available. This has led to lots of challenges with regard to supplies of energy, energy resources quick depletion, increase in building service demands, improvised comfort lifestyle along with time increase spend in builds; this all has increased the energy consumption. Even the global sustainability is also pushing the implementation of green buildings in the real world. Researchers and scientists have been working on this issue for a very long time, but still the issue is prevalent. The aim of this chapter is to present comprehensive and significant research conducted to date with regard to green buildings. The chapter provides in-depth analysis of design technologies (i.e., passive and active technologies) that lay a strong foundation for green building. The chapter also highlights the smart automation technologies which help in energy conservation along with various performance metrics.

Green and Smart Buildings: A Key to Sustainable Global Solutions

The increasing urbanization and above all the increasing demand for more efficiency in energy consumption
and in the management of natural resources makes ever more urgent to tackle the construction of buildings
and the planning of cities in an innovative and sustainable way. In this perspective, some research lines have
emerged referring to the concepts of smart, intelligent, and green/sustainable buildings. Starting from this
analysis, the article aims to highlight how it is possible to synthesize both the environmental quality aspects
and the integrated control of a building in the concept of bright green buildings, and how thus a wider
conceptual reference framework is necessary: identified in the Bright City based on the implementation of a
City Information Modeling (CIM). This methodological framework allows managing the urban
transformation operations in an integrated way and represents a synthesis of the current paradigmatic
references: sustainability, smartness and resilience.

GREEN STUDENT CENTERS' INFLUENCE ON THE CAMPUS ENVIRONMENT Krista L. Harrell Old Dominion University, 2012 Director: Dr. Dana Burnett Green building and design is an emerging trend in institutions of higher education. It is important to consider the practices and expectations of the users of green buildings. The attitudes of faculty, staff, and students play a key role in the overall successful performance of green buildings. This study offers direction for the intentional design and use of green student centers as influential facets of the total environment on college campuses. The research presents cases of how green student center design may be connected to environmental attitudes. This qualitative study examined to what degree three green student centers influence and impact the campus environment. Strange and Banning's three-dimensional matrix and a modified version of the Salter Environmental Type Assessment (SETA) Form C were used to collect data to inform this study. A collective case study analysis examined green student centers at three campuses. Individual interviews, focus groups, and document review were administered. This information may help advance green initiatives related to student-oriented operations, practices and policies, and subsequently influence universities' strategic goals, master plans, and missions.

Intelligent buildings in the education sector have the potential to offer highly productive, green environments that utilize converged and integrated technology to deliver high quality learning experiences for students. The barriers to this implementation are examined; in particular, the inability of some areas of the sector to embrace the holistic and joined up collaborative approach that is necessary for success. The article defines intelligent buildings and examines behavior as well as studying the issues of productivity, performance, effectiveness, and pedagogy. It details the expected return on investment of green and intelligent buildings and the sustainability credentials of the approach. It concludes that intelligent green buildings, do indeed, promise high productivity and sustainability—and warns that this can only be achieved if the cultural and process barriers currently in place are resolved.
