A method and system is provided for testing and analyzing websites via a test-enabled web browser. In the representative embodiment a user controls a test-enabled web browser via a set of pull-down menus, thereby choosing between alternative testing and analysis functional capabilities, selecting files in which to store recordings (scripts), choosing files into which to place test results and messages, and setting various parameters that affect how the testing and analysis functions are performed. When the user requests it, the representative embodiment provides for deep recording of user interactions as they relate to a specific web page currently on display in the browser view area, for extracting key information from the current web page sufficient to validate that a future playback does or does not produce the same effects on the chosen website page, for playing back a prior recording to confirm that a website page continues to pass the user-defined tests, and for providing detailed analyses based on the specific contents of the current website page. The general result of systematic use of the test-enabled browser on websites is improved content quality, demonstrated website server behavior for deep tests, quicker delivery by the website server, and better serviceability for e-business.

A method is provided for ensuring that specific traffic flows are adequately prioritized in a public packet communication network even when the network is heavily congested. Per-flow QoS capability is added to VPN tunnels. Connection requests are routed through a specific port in an access provider's network to designated VPN gateway. If the connection request was accepted, the traffic flows associated with that session may be given a specific priority of QoS level when transiting a packet access network.

To access dynamic content, the browser is able to select from the virtual machines based in large part on the reported current loads of the virtual machines. Once a virtual machine is selected, the browser may communicate directly with the selected web server.

Applications, which consist of one or more files containing executable code and/or data, are stored preferably in unmodified form in a provider system. Separately processable portions of the files contain file structure information as well as actual, processable content. A skeleton of each file, consisting of the file structure information but not the processable content, is stored within a user system, and preferably within a virtual machine, along with access information identifying where the actual content is stored. Whenever the user system, in particular, its operating system, issues a request for access to any file portion whose structure only is stored, then the corresponding content is downloaded via a network, from the provider to the user. A broker system may be included as an intermediary between the provider and the user and may perform such functions as billing and selection of available file providers. Applications are thus streamed piecewise in real time to the user, although the streaming operation remains transparent to the user.

By providing a capability for realistically simulating conditional requests as well as unconditional requests, the stress applied to the server is more representative of the actual traffic load it will experience. By minimizing the amount of information kept in the meta-cache, this realistic simulation is possible without the overhead of a full client cache, and also allows more browsers to be simulated from a particular workstation.

The scheduling is based at least in part on the estimated respective time periods to rename the data in the file systems. Preferably, the scheduling is timed to result in completion of the renaming of the data in all of the file systems at approximately a same time. Preferably, one of the time periods to rename the data in the file systems is based at least in part on a time period to transfer the data to a server associated with the file system and a wait time within the server to schedule the renaming.

The method further includes establishing an asynchronous connection to a metric server chosen for sending the web usage data collected and transmitting to the metric server the web usage data collected as part of a record request using a method such that the record request is not cached at an intermediate proxy. The method further includes contacting an alternate metric server if the metric server chosen is not available or cannot record the web usage data.

A system for automatically segmenting the compilation of a large Java project under a controller node to a grid of slave nodes so as to reduce build time. A build tree scanner at the controller node sizes the number of files in the project and the length of each source file. Each slave node has a complete and synchronized set of all compilable units in the project. The controller node automatically segments the source files into a number of filesets commensurate with the number and resource capacities of slave nodes available for the build, allocates the filesets to the slave nodes, and automatically generates build filesets from a master dependency tree built from dependency trees constructed by each slave node. The build sets are then equitably allocated to the slave nodes. Then the targets are reaped and placed on the controller node, which performs post-compilation tasks.
