The International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), the Earth Orientation Parameter (EOP) time series, and the International Celestial Reference Frame are obtained separately and may thus present inconsistencies. To solve this problem, a first step has been made with the latest ITRF realization (ITRF2005), which has been computed, for the first time, with consistent EOP time series. Another approach to better understand this issue is to directly estimate, in the same process, station positions and EOP time series, from all the space-geodetic measurements.

Towards a Combination of Space-Geodetic Measurements

Space geodetic techniques have different strengths and weaknesses for recovering geodetic parameters which makes their combination useful. However they may have some systematic behaviour which can be detected and removed at the observation level. In order to review the interest in combining techniques at this level, a Working Group was set up in the course of 2009 in the frame of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS). A major task of the WG COL is to study methods and advantages of combining space geodetic techniques (DORIS, GNSS, SLR, VLBI), searching for an optimal strategy to solve for geodetic parameters. The first action of the Working Group was to organize an inter-comparison benchmark campaign to serve as a test. The period chosen is from August 10 to August 30, 2008. It includes the intensive CONT08 VLBI period.

Why Combining at the Observation Level

The aim of the VLBI Analysis Software Comparison Campaign 2015 (VASCC2015) was to compare different VLBI analysis software packages on the basis of computed theoretical delays. Eleven research groups and institutes participated in this project, which allowed us to compare software packages that are used in operational VLBI analyses or that are still under development. We present the first results, and we show how well the individual software packages agree at this stage.

Results from the VLBI Analysis Software Comparison Campaign 2015

This report summarizes the activities of the Bordeaux IVS Analysis Center during the year 2009. The work was focused on (i) regular analysis of the IVS-R1 and IVS-R4 sessions with the GINS software package; (ii) systematic VLBI imaging of the RDV sessions and calculation of the corresponding struc- ture index and compactness values; (iii) analysis of all available structure indices to identify potential defining sources for the ICRF2; (iv) continuation of our observational program to identify suitable radio sources for the link with the future Gaia frame; (v) development of a pipeline to model-fit VLBI structures in an automatic way; and (vi) simulations to assess the imaging capabilities of the VLBI2010 system and the accuracy of the corresponding structure corrections. Also to be mentioned is the en- hancement of the Bordeaux VLBI Image Database and the construction of a dynamic web site for the IVS specific session dedicated to the International Year of Astronomy 2009. The IVS 10th Anniversary celebration held in Bordeaux on 25 March 2009 will remain as the highlight of the past year.

In the framework of the "Groupe de Recherches de Geodesie Spatiale" (GRGS), a rigorous combination of the data from five space geodetic techniques (VLBI, GPS, SLR, LLR and DORIS) is routinely applied to simultaneously determine a Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) and Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP). This analysis is conducted with the software package GINS which has the capability to process data from all five techniques together. Such a combination at the observation level should ultimately facilitate fine geophysical studies of the global Earth system. In this project, Bordeaux Observatory is in charge of the VLBI data analysis, while satellite geodetic data are processed by other groups. In this paper, we present (i) details about the VLBI analysis undertaken with GINS, and (ii) the results obtained for the EOP during the period 2005-2006. We also compare this EOP solution with the IVS (International VLBI Service for geodesy and astrometry) analysis coordinator combined results. The agreement is at the 0.2 mas level, comparable to that of the other IVS analysis centers, which demonstrates the capability of the GINS software for VLBI analysis.
