Elasticity in Cloud Computing: State of the Art and Research Challenges

Cloud computing is now a well-consolidated paradigm for on-demand services provisioning on a pay-as-you-go model. Elasticity, one of the major benefits required for this computing model, is the ability to add and remove resources “on the fly” to handle the load variation. Although many works in literature have surveyed cloud computing and its features, there is a lack of a detailed analysis about elasticity for the cloud. As an attempt to fill this gap, we propose this survey on cloud computing elasticity based on an adaptation of a classic systematic review. We address different aspects of elasticity, such as definitions, metrics and tools for measuring, evaluation of the elasticity, and existing solutions. Finally, we present some open issues and future directions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on cloud computing elasticity using a systematic review approach.

Elasticity in cloud computing: a survey

The concept of event processing is established as a generic computational paradigm in various application fields. Events report on state changes of a system and its environment. Complex event recognition (CER) refers to the identification of composite events of interest, which are collections of simple, derived events that satisfy some pattern, thereby providing the opportunity for reactive and proactive measures. Examples include the recognition of anomalies in maritime surveillance, electronic fraud, cardiac arrhythmias and epidemic spread. This survey elaborates on the whole pipeline from the time CER queries are expressed in the most prominent languages, to algorithmic toolkits for scaling-out CER to clustered and geo-distributed architectural settings. We also highlight future research directions.

Complex event recognition in the Big Data era: a survey

In today's Grids, files are usually managed by Grid data management systems that are superimposed on existing file and storage systems. In this paper, we analyze this predominant approach and argue that object-based file systems can be an alternative when adapted to the characteristics of a Grid environment. We describe how we are solving the challenge of extending the object-based storage architecture for the Grid in XtreemFS, an object-based file system for federated infrastructures. The XtreemFS architecture—a case for object-based file systems in Grids

Currently, the data to be explored and exploited by computing systems increases at an exponential rate. The massive amount of data or so-called “Big Data” put pressure on existing technologies for providing scalable, fast and efficient support. Recent applications and the current user support from multi-domain computing, assisted in migrating from data-centric to knowledge-centric computing. However, it remains a challenge to optimally store and place or migrate such huge data sets across data centers (DCs). In particular, due to the frequent change of application and DC behaviour (i.e., resources or latencies), data access or usage patterns need to be analyzed as well. Primarily, the main objective is to find a better data storage location that improves the overall data placement cost as well as the application performance (such as throughput). In this survey paper, we are providing a state of the art overview of Cloud-centric Big Data placement together with the data storage methodologies. It is an attempt to highlight the actual correlation between these two in terms of better supporting Big Data management. Our focus is on management aspects which are seen under the prism of non-functional properties. In the end, the readers can appreciate the deep analysis of respective technologies related to the management of Big Data and be guided towards their selection in the context of satisfying their non-functional application requirements. Furthermore, challenges are supplied highlighting the current gaps in Big Data management marking down the way it needs to evolve in the near future.

A survey on data storage and placement methodologies for Cloud-Big Data ecosystem

NoSQL databases manage the bulk of data produced by modern Web applications such as social networks. This stems from their ability to partition and spread data to all available nodes, allowing NoSQL systems to scale. Unfortunately, current solutions' scale out is oblivious to the underlying data access patterns, resulting in both highly skewed load across nodes and suboptimal node configurations.In this paper, we first show that judicious placement of HBase partitions taking into account data access patterns can improve overall throughput by 35%. Next, we go beyond current state of the art elastic systems limited to uninformed replica addition and removal by: i) reconfiguring existing replicas according to access patterns and ii) adding replicas specifically configured to the expected access pattern.MeT is a prototype for a Cloud-enabled framework that can be used alone or in conjunction with OpenStack for the automatic and heterogeneous reconfiguration of a HBase deployment. Our evaluation, conducted using the YCSB workload generator and a TPC-C workload, shows that MeT is able to i) autonomously achieve the performance of a manual configured cluster and ii) quickly reconfigure the cluster according to unpredicted workload changes.

Cloud computing infrastructures are the most recent approach to the development and conception of computational systems. Cloud infrastructures are complex environments with various subsystems, each one with their own challenges. Cloud systems should be able to provide the following fundamental property: elasticity. Elasticity is the ability to automatically add and remove instances according to the needs of the system. This is a requirement for pay-per-use billing models.Various open source software solutions allow companies and institutions to build their own Cloud infrastructure. However, in most of these, the elasticity feature is quite immature. Monitoring and timely adapting the active resources of a Cloud computing infrastructure is key to provide the elasticity required by diverse, multi-tenant and pay-per-use business models.In this paper, we propose Elastack, an automated monitoring and adaptive system, generic enough to be applied to existing IaaS frameworks, and intended to enable the elasticity they currently lack. Our approach offers any Cloud infrastructure the mechanisms to implement automated monitoring and adaptation as well as the flexibility to go beyond these. We evaluate Elastack by integrating it with the OpenStack showing how easy it is to add these important features with a minimum, almost imperceptible, amount of modifications to the default installation.

Automatic elasticity in OpenStack

Database replication has been a common feature in database management systems (DBMSs) for a long time. In particular, asynchronous or lazy propagation of updates provides a simple yet efficient way of increasing performance and data availability and is widely available across the DBMS product spectrum. High end systems additionally offer sophisticated conflict resolution and data propagation options as well as, synchronous replication based on distributed locking and two-phase commit protocols. This paper presents GORDA architecture and programming interface (GAPI), that enables different replication strategies to be implemented once and deployed in multiple DBMSs. This is achieved by proposing a reflective interface to transaction processing instead of relying on-client interfaces or ad-hoc server extensions. The proposed approach is thus cost-effective, in enabling reuse of replication protocols or components in multiple DBMSs, as well as potentially efficient, as it allows close coupling with DBMS internals.

GORDA: An Open Architecture for Database Replication

Key-value stores hold the unprecedented bulk of the data produced by applications such as social networks. Their scalability and availability requirements often outweigh sacrificing richer data and processing models, and even elementary data consistency. Moreover, existing key-value stores have only random or order based placement strategies.In this paper we exploit arbitrary data relations easily expressed by the application to foster data locality and improve the performance of complex queries common in social network read-intensive workloads.We present a novel data placement strategy, supporting dynamic tags, based on multidimensional locality-preserving mappings.We compare our data placement strategy with the ones used in existing key-value stores under the workload of a typical social network application and show that the proposed correlation-aware data placement strategy offers a major improvement on the system's overall response time and network requirements.

A correlation-aware data placement strategy for key-value stores

The increasing demand for real-time analytics requires the fusion of Transactional (OLTP) and Analytical (OLAP) systems, eschewing ETL processes and introducing a plethora of proposals for the so-called Hybrid Analytical and Transactional Processing (HTAP) systems.Unfortunately, current benchmarking approaches are not able to comprehensively produce a unified metric from the assessment of an HTAP system. The evaluation of both engine types is done separately, leading to the use of disjoint sets of benchmarks such as TPC-C or TPC-H.In this paper we propose a new benchmark, HTAPBench, providing a unified metric for HTAP systems geared toward the execution of constantly increasing OLAP requests limited by an admissible impact on OLTP performance. To achieve this, a load balancer within HTAPBench regulates the coexistence of OLTP and OLAP workloads, proposing a method for the generation of both new data and requests, so that OLAP requests over freshly modified data are comparable across runs.We demonstrate the merit of our approach by validating it with different types of systems: OLTP, OLAP and HTAP; showing that the benchmark is able to highlight the differences between them, while producing queries with comparable complexity across experiments with negligible variability.
