Microwaves and millimeter waves have been used extensively to image dielectric bodies. The application of microwaves in biomedical imaging and diagnostics, however, remains a field with many uncharted territories. This article is an overview on medical imaging using microwave imaging for breast cancer and its challenges, hopes, and outlook.

Microwave Imaging for Breast Cancer

Widely used medical imaging systems in clinics currently rely on X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, computed tomography, and positron emission tomography. The aforementioned technologies provide clinical data with a variety of resolution, implementation cost, and use complexity, where some of them rely on ionizing radiation. Microwave sensing and imaging (MSI) is an alternative method based on nonionizing electromagnetic (EM) signals operating over the frequency range covering hundreds of megahertz to tens of gigahertz. The advantages of using EM signals are low health risk, low cost implementation, low operational cost, ease of use, and user friendliness. Advancements made in microelectronics, material science, and embedded systems make it possible for miniaturization and integration into portable, handheld, mobile devices with networking capability. MSI has been used for tumor detection, blood clot/stroke detection, heart imaging, bone imaging, cancer detection, and localization of in-body RF sources. The fundamental notion of MSI is that it exploits the tissue-dependent dielectric contrast to reconstruct signals and images using radar-based or tomographic imaging techniques. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the active MSI for various medical applications, for which the motivation, challenges, possible solutions, and future directions are discussed.

On the Opportunities and Challenges in Microwave Medical Sensing and Imaging

Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) detection is one of the most popular methods of pipeline inspection. It is a nondestructive testing technique which uses magnetic sensitive sensors to detect the magnetic leakage field of defects on both the internal and external surfaces of pipelines. This paper introduces the main principles, measurement and processing of MFL data. As the key point of a quantitative analysis of MFL detection, the identification of the leakage magnetic signal is also discussed. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of different identification methods are analyzed. Then the paper briefly introduces the expert systems used. At the end of this paper, future developments in pipeline MFL detection are predicted.

Theory and Application of Magnetic Flux Leakage Pipeline Detection

Optical super-oscillations, first predicted in 1952 and observed in 2007, offer a promising route to optical super-resolution imaging and show potential for manufacturing with light and data-storage applications such as direct optical recording and heat assisted magnetic recording. We review the history and basic physics behind the phenomenon of super-oscillation and its application in optics. We overview recent results in creating optical super-oscillations using binary masks, spatial light modulators and planar metamaterial masks. We also investigate the limits and competitiveness of super-oscillatory imaging.

Optical super-oscillations: sub-wavelength light focusing and super-resolution imaging

Breast cancer is anticipated to be responsible for almost 40,000 deaths in the USA in 2011. The current clinical detection techniques suffer from limitations which motivated researchers to investigate alternative modalities for the early detection of breast cancer. This paper focuses on reviewing the main electromagnetic techniques for breast cancer detection. More specifically, this work reviews the cutting edge research in microwave imaging, electrical impedance tomography, diffuse optical tomography, microwave radiometry, biomagnetic detection, biopotential detection, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The goal of this paper is to provide biomedical researchers with an in-depth review that includes all main electromagnetic techniques in the literature and the latest progress in each of these techniques.

Review of Electromagnetic Techniques for Breast Cancer Detection

A system comprises one or more first electromagnetic coils configured to generate and direct first excitation signals toward a plurality of casings in a wellbore and receive response signals based on the excitation signals. The system also comprises a magnetic field source configured to generate a static magnetic field in a particular casing of the plurality of casings and a magnetometer configured to receive response signals based on the static magnetic field in the particular casing. The system further comprises one or more processors configured to receive a first response signal from the one or more electromagnetic coils, receive a second response signal from the magnetometer, and determine, based on the first response signal and the second response signal, whether a defect exists in the plurality of casings.

New High-Definition Frequency Tool for Tubing and Multiple Casing Corrosion Detection

In this letter, we propose a three-dimensional microwave holographic imaging approach for the cases where the object is in the far zone of the antenna but the measurements are performed in the near zone of the scattering object. Typical applications include concealed weapon detection, through-the-wall imaging, etc. In the proposed approach, the phaseless radiation pattern of the antenna, acquired through measurements, is employed to improve the quality of the image reconstruction results. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach via a full-wave simulation example and an experiment and compare the images to the previously proposed holographic imaging approaches.

Microwave Holographic Imaging Using the Antenna Phaseless Radiation Pattern

Recently, nonmetallic materials, which are resilient to corrosion, low cost, and lightweight, have been exploited in many industrial sectors such as oil and gas field. A common application of them is in the form of pipes. Despite the advantages, these pipes can be damaged by delamination, defects, holes, and erosion, which may lead to major production failures or even environmental catastrophes. To prevent these issues, nondestructive testing (NDT) of these pipes is required to replace these components in a timely manner. Due to the fact that the traditional NDT methods are mostly effective for metallic pipes, microwave holographic imaging is proposed for inspection of multiple concentric nonmetallic pipes. Besides, standardized minimum norm (SMN) is used to mitigate the depth biasing problem in the proposed imaging technique. To reduce the complexity of the imaging system, we aim at using the narrowest possible frequency band using an array of receiver antennas. The performance of the proposed NDT method is validated through simulation and experimental data in two scenarios including the antennas placed outside the pipes and inside the pipes.

Microwave Holographic Imaging of Nonmetallic Concentric Pipes

An electromagnetic sensor for a pipe inspection tool includes a first coil antenna having a wire wrapped about a first core in a first direction, and a second coil antenna axially offset from the first coil and the wire wrapped about a second core in a second direction. A power source is coupled to the wire such that, when excited by the power source, the first coil antenna generates a first magnetic field in a first polar orientation and the second coil antenna generates a second magnetic field in a second polar orientation opposite the first polar orientation.
