Luminescence and laser properties of RE-doped silica optical fibers: The role of composition, fabrication processing, and inter-ionic energy transfers

Inorganic glasses co-doped with rare-earth ions have a key potential application value in the field of optical communications. In this paper, we have fabricated and then characterized multicomponent TiO2-modified germanate glasses co-doped with Yb3+/Ln3+ (Ln = Pr, Er, Tm, Ho) with excellent spectroscopic properties. Glass systems were directly excited at 980 nm (the 2F7/2 → 2F5/2 transition of Yb3+). We demonstrated that the introduction of TiO2 is a promising option to significantly enhance the main near-infrared luminescence bands located at the optical telecommunication window at 1.3 μm (Pr3+: 1G4 → 3H5), 1.5 μm (Er3+: 4I13/2 → 4I15/2), 1.8 μm (Tm3+: 3F4 → 3H6) and 2.0 μm (Ho3+: 5I7 → 7I8). Based on the lifetime values, the energy transfer efficiencies (ηET) were estimated. The values of ηET are changed from 31% for Yb3+/Ho3+ glass to nearly 53% for Yb3+/Pr3+ glass. The investigations show that obtained titanate–germanate glass is an interesting type of special glasses integrating luminescence properties and spectroscopic parameters, which may be a promising candidate for application in laser sources emitting radiation and broadband tunable amplifiers operating in the near-infrared range.

Near-IR Luminescence of Rare-Earth Ions (Er3+, Pr3+, Ho3+, Tm3+) in Titanate–Germanate Glasses under Excitation of Yb3+

We report a novel pretreatment method to improve the radiation resistance of Er-doped fiber (EDF). The processing object of this method is EDF preform, and the pretreatment processing involves three steps: deuterium loading, pre-irradiation, and thermal annealing. The effects of pretreatment conditions on the optical loss, gain performance, and radiation resistance of EDF were systematically studied. The relevant mechanisms were revealed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), radiation-induced absorption (RIA), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. The results show that the pretreatment can not only greatly reduce the hydroxyl content of the EDF core, but it can also effectively improve the radiation resistance of EDF. The online test results show that the gain of the commercial, pristine, and pretreated EDFs were reduced by 19.0, 4.2, and 1.3 dB, respectively, corresponding to a decrease of 68.1, 16.2, and 4.7% after 98 krad X-rays irradiation. The high vacuum experiments show that the pretreatment method can maintain long-term stable high radiation resistance. This work provides a reference for the development of high-performance radiation resistant EDFs for use in the lower, middle, and geosynchronous earth orbit.

Improved radiation resistance of an Er-doped silica fiber by a preform pretreatment method.

In this review, we present a short overview of the development of sol–gel glasses for application in the field of photonics, with a focus on some of the most interesting results obtained by our group and collaborators in that area. Our main attention is devoted to silicate glasses of different compositions, which are characterized by specific optical and spectroscopic properties for various applications, ranging from luminescent systems to light-confining structures and memristors. In particular, the roles of rare-earth doping, matrix composition, the densification process and the fabrication protocol on the structural, optical and spectroscopic properties of the developed photonic systems are discussed through appropriate examples. Some achievements in the fabrication of oxide sol–gel optical waveguides and of micro- and nanostructures for the confinement of light are also briefly discussed.

Sol–Gel Photonic Glasses: From Material to Application

Expanding gain bandwidth into the L-band for erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is a crucial strategy to overcome limitations in prevalent C-band focused commercial silica-based EDFAs, significantly boosting optical network transmission capacity. Herein, we synthesized Er3+-doped broadband near-infrared emission tellurite glasses utilizing the melt quenching process, systematically exploring the impact of ZnCl2 on the glass structure and optical properties. The 82TeO2–3Nb2O5–15ZnCl2–3Er2O3 (TNZ15) glass emerged as a standout candidate for broadband amplifiers around wavelength at 1.55 μm. With escalating ZnCl2 concentration, a discernible red shift in the emission peak wave lines was observed, accompanied by an expansion of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) from 98 nm to 106 nm. Noteworthy characteristics of all samples included exceptional thermal stability and elevated near-infrared (NIR) transmittance. Application of the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory facilitated the calculation of J-O parameter intensity, providing deeper insights into the optical behavior of the materials. Finally, the evaluation of TNZ15 planar optical waveguides, employing the vertical top pumping mode of two 980 nm LEDs, encompassed both the C-band (1530–1565 nm) and the L-band (1565–1625 nm). The results underscore the potential of TNZ15 glass as a promising gain material for broadband optical amplifiers and lasers, offering valuable insights into the development of next-generation optical amplification technologies. 

Net gain in C+L band from LED pumped broadband emission in Er3+-doped oxyhalide tellurite glass

In this study, Er3+/Al3+ co-doped silica glasses with various Al/Er ratios ranging from 0 to 200 and a constant Er2O3 amount were prepared using the sol-gel method combined with high-temperature vacuum sintering. The absorption, emission spectra, and fluorescence lifetime of Er3+ ions were recorded and the absorption and emission cross sections were calculated. Using Raman, 27Al and 29Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR), 27Al triple-quantum (TQ)-MAS-NMR, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies, the physical and optical properties were correlated with the glass structural modifications due to the Al/Er ratio change. With the increase in the Al/Er ratio, the content of Al3+ ions around the Er3+ ions gradually increased. Meanwhile, the AlO5 and AlO6 polyhedrons increased at the expense of the AlO4 and SiO4 tetrahedrons, which resulted in an improved symmetry and better ionic Er–O bonds. These structural changes led to the site-to-site variations in the Er3+ local environment and the changes in the ligand field strength of the Er–O bonds. This, in turn, resulted in the inhomogeneous broadening of the absorption and emission spectra, with a blue shift of both absorption and emission peaks and a decrease in both absorption and emission at 1.53 μm. With the increase in Al/Er ratio, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the emission increased from 27.2 to 54.3 nm. The FWHM × emission cross section ( σ e m i) parameter for evaluating broadband amplification behavior was 30.1 × 10−20 cm2 · nm. This work reveals the close relationship between the glass structure and the spectroscopic properties of Er3+ ions and provides an important reference for the design of broadband amplifier materials in the field of optical communication.
