I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. Not by Genes Alone: How Culture Transformed Human Evolution

Many current neurophysiological, psychophysical, and psychological approaches to vision rest on the idea that when we see, the brain produces an internal representation of the world. The activation of this internal representation is assumed to give rise to the experience of seeing. The problem with this kind of approach is that it leaves unexplained how the existence of such a detailed internal representation might produce visual consciousness. An alternative proposal is made here. We propose that seeing is a way of acting. It is a particular way of exploring the environment. Activity in internal representations does not generate the experience of seeing. The outside world serves as its own, external, representation. The experience of seeing occurs when the organism masters what we call the governing laws of sensorimotor contingency. The advantage of this approach is that it provides a natural and principled way of accounting for visual consciousness, and for the differences in the perceived quality of sensory experience in the different sensory modalities. Several lines of empirical evidence are brought forward in support of the theory, in particular: evidence from experiments in sensorimotor adaptation, visual “filling in,” visual stability despite eye movements, change blindness, sensory substitution, and color perception.

The accuracy of perceptual processes subserving different perception–action systems was evaluated by presenting subjects (N = 17) with similar optic flow patterns, while requiring different actions from them. Squash balls were dropped along a fixed trajectory, and subjects were asked to (a) hit the ball using their own arm, (b) release an artificial arm to hit the ball, and (c) indicate when the ball was at the point of contact of conditions (a) and (b). The variability of the temporal initiation point of the actions, which served as an operationalization of perceptual accuracy, was compared under all three conditions. The results indicated that the variability of the temporal initiation point was smallest under the natural arm condition, even though movement time was more variable here than under the artificial arm condition. In daily life we often encounter situations in which we have to coordinate our actions with others to perform a task. Such joint action is considered to be fundamental to social interactions. In this study we set out to explore how interpersonal movement coordination in a joint action task is guided by the use of visual information from the task environment. To this end we designed an (interpersonal) ball-and-beam task in which agents control the motion of a golf ball on a two-meter long beam by (jointly) changing the inclination of the beam through manipulation of the height of (one of) the hand-held extremities. In the experiment 24 healthy participants (15 men, 9 women, age 19-34) were to roll the ball as often as possible between two targets on the beam (distance 140 cm, width 15 cm), with a point awarded for each ball motion direction reversal occurring within a target. The experiment consisted of a solo and a duo session, each containing 15 two-minute trials, in which participants performed the ball-and-beam task either alone or in cooperation with another participant. Ball and beam motions were tracked using passive reflective markers and Kinovea motion capture software. In both sessions, we found that the overall performance on the task improved over practice, accompanied by an increase in beam amplitude and a decrease in ball cycle time. Perception-action coupling was first explored in the solo sessions, allowing two different types of behavioral dynamics to be identified. We tentatively conclude that these different dynamical patterns emerge from differences in the visual information used at the level of the ball trajectory. The next step in the project is to explore the role of visual information in guiding interpersonal coordination in the duo (i.e., joint action) version of this simple yet rich experimental paradigm. 

Visually guided (joint) action in a novel ball-and-beam task

Five elite gymnasts performed giant circles on the high bar under different conditions of loading (without and with 6-kg loads attached to the shoulders, waist or ankles). Comparing the gymnasts' kinematic pattern of movement with that of a triple-pendulum moving under the sole influence of nonmuscular forces revealed qualitative similarities, including the adoption of an arched position during the downswing and a piked position during the upswing. The structuring role of nonmuscular forces in the organization of movement was further reinforced by the results of an inverse dynamics analysis, assessing the contributions of gravitational, inertial and muscular components to the net joint torques. Adding loads at the level of the shoulders, waist or ankles systematically influenced movement kinematics and net joint torques. However, with the loads attached at the level of the shoulders or waist, the load-induced changes in gravitational and inertial torques provided the required increase in net joint torque, thereby allowing the muscular torques to remain unchanged. With the loads attached at the level of the ankles, this was no longer the case and the gymnasts increased the muscular torques at the shoulder and hip joints. Together, these results demonstrate that expert gymnasts skillfully exploit the operative nonmuscular forces, employing muscle force only in the capacity of complementary forces needed to perform the task.
