A non-blocking switching network for use in a TDM (time division multiplex) system for switching digital signals carried on incoming buses to outgoing buses (e.g. in a telephone switching office) is disclosed. In one embodiment the digital signals, on each pair of incoming buses, are alternately stored in two memory devices. During "even" frames the digital signals from a first incoming bus of the pair are stored in a first memory device and during "odd" frames the digital signals from the first incoming bus of the pair are stored in a second memory device. Similarly, during the "even" frames the digital signals from the second incoming bus of the pair are stored in the second memory device and during the "odd" frames the digital signals from the second incoming bus of the pair are stored in the first memory device. Also, during "even" frames the first outgoing bus is responsive to signals stored in the first memory device and during "odd" frames is responsive to the signals stored in the second memory device. Similarly, during "even" frames the second outgoing bus is responsive to signals stored in the second memory device and during "odd" frames is responsive to the signals stored in the first memory device.

An FSK modem for coupling a standard data port (50) to a telephone line (45) in which the signal path between the phone line and the data port passes through a processor (55). When the modem is in a transparent mode of operation, for transmitting data, a timer (190) detects the passage of a predetermined period of time after the most recent data input signal input to a data port (50). If the next sequence of data signals corresponds to an escape character, the program (112) controlling the modem waits to see if a second occurrence of the predetermined period of time follows provision of the escape character. If this occurs, the modem switches to a command mode of operation in which it ceases to modulate and transmit signals and waits for commands to be entered at the data port. The same frequency detection apparatus (83, 192, 180) is used to both demodulate FSK encoded signals and detect the presence of a telephone ringing signal on the line. A pair of impedances (161, 162) provide alternate paths either through an input filtering network (167) or bypassing the network (135, 69) in a manner which allows the ring signals to pass directly to the input (69) of the frequency detector while assuring that only filtered FSK signals reach the input. Also shown is the use of the same frequency synthesizing apparatus (86, 253, 259) for generating FSK output signals and high group DTMF signals with appropriate switchable attenuation (88) provided in this signal path.

A coupling network at the junction of several multichannel TDM/PCM links comprises a pair of switching networks each including a set of input group units receiving incoming messages from respective PCM links, a set of output group units transmitting outgoing messages to respective PCM links, and a switching matrix interconnecting the two sets of group units. The bits of a code word representing an incoming message sample, arriving at a line unit individually associated with the respective PCM channel, are delivered to the corresponding input group unit during a receiving period, are read out during a transfer interval via the switching matrix to the output group unit for which they are intended, and are thence fed to the proper line unit during a transmitting period. The two switching networks are identical and have their input and output group units connected to all the line units; a processor, controlling the establishment of interchannel connections through the switching matrix of either of these networks, designates one of them as a master and the other as a slave for standby purposes. A coordinating unit, connected to the output group units of both switching networks (or of corresponding subdivisions thereof), checks on the correlation of their operations and transmits error signals to the processor in the absence of such correlation; this coordinating unit also controls, in response to instructions from the processor, possible changeover from one switching network to the other in the event of a malfunction.

Coupling network for time-division telecommunication system

A time division switching network is disclosed using both time division switching stages and space division switching stages. The network is designed for high traffic volume and includes configurations in which (1) the number of channels for one direction of transmission in each time-division stage group is equal to half the number of elementary network time slots. Each time division group has control memory and speech, each such memory having rows, the number of rows of the control memory being equal to the number of network time slots and the number of rows of the speech memory being equal to the number of channels for the group.
