We have built a large area hodoscope to identify muons from semileptonic decays of beauty particles produced in the WA92 experiment at the CERN Super-Proton-Synchrotron. The hodoscope is made of resistive electrode chambers read out with strips of 3 cm pitch. The hodoscope has a fast response with a time resolution of 5 ns and a space resolution of 1 cm. A fast trigger processor selects straight tracks pointing to the interaction vertex in a fixed processing time of 90 ns.

Results are given on tests of a high-resolution tracking hodoscope based on layers of 26-μm-bore glass capillaries filled with organic liquid scintillator (1-methylnaphthalene doped with R39). The detector prototype consisted of three 2-mm-thick parallel layers, with surface areas of 2.1×21 cm 2 . The layers had a centre-to-centre spacing of 6 mm, and were read by an optoelectronic chain comprising two electrostatically focused image intensifiers and an Electron-Bombarded Charge-Coupled Device (EBCCD). Tracks of cosmic-ray particles were recorded and analysed. The observed hit density was 6.6 hits/mm for particles crossing the layers perpendicularly, at a distance of 1 cm from the capillaries’ readout end, and 4.2 hits/mm for particles at a distance of 20 cm. A track segment reconstructed in a single layer had an rms residual of ∼20 μm, and allowed determination of the track position in a neighbouring layer with a precision of ∼170 μm. This latter value corresponded to an rms angular resolution per layer of about 30 mrad. A comparison is made between capillary layers and silicon microstrip planes.

Results from a neural-network trigger based on the digital MA16 chip of Siemens are reported. The neural trigger has been applied to data from the WA92 experiment, looking for beauty particles, which have been collected during a run in which a neural trigger module based on Intel's analog neural chip ETANN operated, as already reported. The MA16 board hosting the chip has a 16-bit I O precision and a 53-bit precision for internal calculations. It operated at 50 MHz, yielding a response time for a 16 input-variable net of 3 μs for a Fisher discriminant (1-layer net) and of 6 μs for a 2-layer net. Results are compared with those previously obtained with the ETANN trigger.

The Decay Detector is a compact array of 10 μm pitch silicon microstrip detectors designed to give charged track data which is sufficient, both in quantity and in precision, to allow reconstruction of beauty particle decays. It has been built for Beatrice, a fixed-target hadroproduction experiment at CERN. This “electronic bubble chamber” consists of sixteen 5 mm × 5 mm microstrip planes comprising more than 8000 detector channels packed into a volume of less than 0.8 cm 3 . The pulse heights of all channels are read by analogue front-end electronics and are then compared with individually set thresholds and pedestals. The performance of the Decay Detector has been studied in a test beam and data are presented on its spatial precision, efficiency, and other characteristics.
