Stressful environments such as salinity, drought, and high temperature (heat) cause alterations in a wide range of physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes in plants. Photosynthesis, the most fundamental and intricate physiological process in all green plants, is also severely affected in all its phases by such stresses. Since the mechanism of photosynthesis involves various components, including photosynthetic pigments and photosystems, the electron transport system, and CO2 reduction pathways, any damage at any level caused by a stress may reduce the overall photosynthetic capacity of a green plant. Details of the stress-induced damage and adverse effects on different types of pigments, photosystems, components of electron transport system, alterations in the activities of enzymes involved in the mechanism of photosynthesis, and changes in various gas exchange characteristics, particularly of agricultural plants, are considered in this review. In addition, we discussed also progress made during the last two decades in producing transgenic lines of different C3 crops with enhanced photosynthetic performance, which was reached by either the overexpression of C3 enzymes or transcription factors or the incorporation of genes encoding C4 enzymes into C3 plants. We also discussed critically a current, worldwide effort to identify signaling components, such as transcription factors and protein kinases, particularly mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) involved in stress adaptation in agricultural plants.

Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases

Driven by energy neutral/positive of wastewater treatment plants, significant efforts have been made on the research and development of mainstream partial nitritation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) (PN/A) (deammonification) process since the early 2010s. To date, feasibility of mainstream PN/A process has been demonstrated and proven by experimental results at various scales although with the low loading rates and elevated nitrogen concentration in the effluent at low temperatures (15–10 °C). This review paper provides an overview of the current state of research and development of mainstream PN/A process and critically analyzes the bottlenecks for its full-scale application. The paper discusses the following: (i) the current status of research and development of mainstream PN/A process; (ii) the interactions among aerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria, aerobic nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, anammox bacteria, and heterotrophic bacteria; (iii) the suppression of aerobic nitrite-oxidizing bacteria; (iv) process and bioreactors; and (v) suggested further studies including efficient and robust carbon concentrating pretreatment, deepening of understanding competition between autotrophic nitrogen-converting organisms, intensification of biofilm anammox activity, reactor design, and final polishing.

Programmed cell death protein 1/programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) is a negative modulatory signaling pathway for activation of T cell. It is acknowledged that PD-1/PD-L1 axis plays a crucial role in the progression of tumor by altering status of immune surveillance. As one of the most promising immune therapy strategies, PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor is a breakthrough for the therapy of some refractory tumors. However, response rate of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in overall patients is unsatisfactory, which limits the application in clinical practice. Therefore, biomarkers which could effectively predict the efficacy of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors are crucial for patient selection. Biomarkers reflecting tumor immune microenvironment and tumor cell intrinsic features, such as PD-L1 expression, density of tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL), tumor mutational burden, and mismatch-repair (MMR) deficiency, have been noticed to associate with treatment effect of anti-PD-1/anti-PD-L1 therapy. Furthermore, gut microbiota, circulating biomarkers, and patient previous history have been found as valuable predictors as well. Therefore establishing a comprehensive assessment framework involving multiple biomarkers would be meaningful to interrogate tumor immune landscape and select sensitive patients.

Biomarkers for predicting efficacy of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a widely consumed spice in the world. Garlic contains diverse bioactive compounds, such as allicin, alliin, diallyl sulfide, diallyl disulfide, diallyl trisulfide, ajoene, and S-allyl-cysteine. Substantial studies have shown that garlic and its bioactive constituents exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulatory, cardiovascular protective, anticancer, hepatoprotective, digestive system protective, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, neuroprotective, and renal protective properties. In this review, the main bioactive compounds and important biological functions of garlic are summarized, highlighting and discussing the relevant mechanisms of actions. Overall, garlic is an excellent natural source of bioactive sulfur-containing compounds and has promising applications in the development of functional foods or nutraceuticals for the prevention and management of certain diseases.

Bioactive Compounds and Biological Functions of Garlic ( Allium sativum L.)

Background/context: Dietary diversity (DD) is universally recognized as a key component of healthy diets. Healthy diet is one of the most important determinants that can influence nutritional status of women of reproductive age. \nMaterials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in Shitpara village of Sreepur Upazila under Gazipur district during February to June 2013 to assess the dietary diversity and nutritional status of women of reproductive age. Convenient sampling technique was adopted to select 181 women. Interview schedule & checklist used as research instrument. \nResults: The mean(+/-s.d.)age of the respondents was 27.45+/-9.38 years, 133(80%) of them were married and 176(97.2%) are literate. Mean family size was 5.34+/- 2.386 persons and mean family income was 9611.05 Taka per month. Among 133 married women, 68(51%) have 2 or less than two children. Their mean(+/-s.d.) dietary diversity score was 5.13+/- 1.19 and majority 149(82%) of them having medium dietary diversity tercile (4-6). All of them ate carbohydrate types of food, 174(96.1%) protein rich foods & 83(45.9%) vit.A rich vegetables & fruits. Their mean BMI was 22.35 +/- 3.71 kg/ m2. Majority 118 (65%) of them having normal BMI and 22(12%) are under weight. Only 6(3%) of them are obese. Thoughdietary diversity was medium (4-6); relationship between dietary diversity and nutritional status could not be established. \nConclusion:The qualitative measurement of dietary diversity is not sufficient enough to identify women at risk of under- or over nutrition. \nJ Dhaka Medical College, Vol. 27, No.1, April, 2018, Page 36-40

Dietary diversity and nutritional status among women of reproductive age group in a selected rural community of Bangladesh

Introduction: Neonatal jaundice is one of the most common morbidities observed during the neonatal period. Several risk factors are responsible for this condition. 
Objective: This study was aimed to determine the possible risk factors and immediate outcome for jaundice in newborns. 
Methods: This case control study was performed over a period of 18 months (March 2019 -August 2020) in the Special Care Newborn Unit (SCANU) of Dr. M R Khan Shishu Hospital & Institute of Child Health (ICH). Risk factors for jaundice were evaluated by comparing cases with jaundice and controls having no jaundice. 
Results: A total of 230 neonates with jaundice and 250 neonates having no jaundice were enrolled. Maternal age between 31-40 years, less than 4 antenatal visits, primi, presence of maternal diabetes, babies born via caesarian section, small for gestational age, prematurity and intra-uterine growth restriction were significantly associated with jaundice in neonates (p value < 0.05). Multi-variate analysis revealed, babies with mothers having <4 antenatal visits were found to have 13 times more risk of developing jaundice than their matched controls (p= 0.00, CI= 0.78-14.9). Mean duration of phototherapy was longer for babies having jaundice due to blood group incompatibilities (4.82 ± 1.94). Most of the patients (91%) were discharged to home. 
Conclusion: Less than four antenatal visit is a significant risk factor for neonates to develop significant jaundice requiring treatment. Babies with blood group incompatibilities tend to require longer duration of phototherapy wherever most of the babies discharged to home with good recovery.

Risk Factors and Outcome of Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia: A Case Control Study in a Tertiary Level Paediatric Hospital

Nine species of fungi belonging to eight genera of Deuteromycetes were found associated with leaves and fruits of breadfruit, Artocarpus altilis. The fungi were Alternaria alternata (Fries) Keissler, Aspergillus niger Van Tiegh, Aspergillus flavus Link, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc, Curvularia lunata (Wakker) Boedijn., Penicillium sp. Pteroconium state of Apiospora camptospora Penz. & Sacc. and Spicaria sp., and Zygosporium oscheoides Mont.. This is the first report of association of A. alternata, C. gloeosporioides., Curvularia lunata, Penicillium sp. Pteroconium state of A. camptospora, Spicaria sp. and Z. oscheoides, with breadfruit. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was the predominating fungus recorded on all infected matured leaves showing brown lesion and anthracnose symptom, and also pathogenic to breadfruit plant.

Short communication ASSOCIATION OF FUNGI WITH BREADFRUIT (ARTOCARPUS ALTILIS FOSB.)

ABSTRACT Background Intellectual disability and mental health disorders constitute a major health problem globally with higher economic burden in low- and middle-income countries such as Bangladesh. In 2017, the World Bank estimated that 85% of the global population lived in low-middle-income countries. Limited research has explored health practitioner knowledge and/or confidence in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues in persons with intellectual disabilities (IDs) in low-income countries such as Bangladesh. Method One hundred and ninety-seven Bangladeshi-based health practitioners were grouped into 7 main professional groups according the current Bangladeshi health hierarchy (psychiatrists; traditional healers and community workers; medical doctors; nurses; psychologists; allied health: speech therapists, occupational therapists, social workers; and others: teachers physiotherapists, administration staff). A 34-item online survey was completed, which included questions measuring symptoms of common mental health disorders with reference to the Psychiatric Assessment Schedule for Adults with Developmental Disabilities, and questions measuring confidence working with persons with IDs from the Therapy Confidence Scale-Intellectual Disabilities. Results Participants demonstrated low knowledge of symptomology but were “confident” working with people with IDs. Kruskal–Wallis H tests indicated a significant effect of professional group on both overall knowledge and confidence levels, respectively. Traditional healers and community health workers had significantly more knowledge of symptoms than all other practitioners for obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, psychosis, and hypomania. Conclusion Participants demonstrated confidence, but low knowledge, in treating individuals with IDs. The development of training programs to address specific deficits in knowledge of mental health symptoms, and confidence in using assessment and assessment-based communication, is recommended.
