Toward a portable, self-administered critical flicker frequency test
Ravi Karkar,Rafal Kocielnik,Xiaoyi Zhang,James Fogarty,George N. Ioannou,Sean A. Munson,Jasmine Zia +6 more
- 12 Sep 2016
TL;DR: The initial work to create a portable and self-administered version of the Critical Flicker Frequency test, focusing on hepatic encephalopathy, has potential for long-term self-monitoring in a variety of conditions impacting mental health, including cerebro-organic syndromes, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, chronic fatigue, and testing of psychoactive drugs.

Methods and systems for self-administered measurement of critical flicker frequency (cff)
George N. Ioannou,James Fogarty,Jasmine Zia,Rafal Kocielnik,Ravi Karkar,Sean A. Munson,Xiaoyi Zhang +6 more
- 11 Mar 2021
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe methods, systems, and apparatuses for causing light to be emitted, causing a frequency at which the light is emitted to vary, receiving, based on the frequency variation, a user input, determining a critical flicker frequency (CFF) corresponding to the user input and determining, depending on the CFF, a disease state.
Opportunities and challenges for self-experimentation in self-tracking
Ravi Karkar,James Fogarty,Julie A. Kientz,Sean A. Munson,Roger Vilardaga,Jasmine Zia +5 more
- 07 Sep 2015
TL;DR: How self-experimentation situates within existing models of personal informatics processes is examined, the current focus on personal food triggers in patients suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome is discussed, and open challenges for self-Experimentation more broadly are highlighted.
The Importance of Starting With Goals in N-of-1 Studies.

- 22 May 2020
TL;DR: It is argued that elicitation of individualized goals and customization of tracking to support those goals are a critical yet under-studied and under-supported aspect of self-tracking.
