Trichoderma as biostimulant: exploiting the multilevel properties of a plant beneficial fungus

Salinity stress affected crop production of more than 20% of irrigated land globally. In the present study the effect of different concentrations of NaCl (0, 100 and 200 mM) on growth, physio-biochemical attributes, antioxidant enzymes, oil content, etc in Brassica juncea and the protective role of Trichoderma harzanium (TH) was investigated. Salinity stress deteriorates growth, physio-biochemical attributes, that ultimately leads to decreased biomass yield in mustard seedlings. Higher concentration of NaCl (200 mM) decreased the plant height by 33.79%, root length by 29.79% and plant dry weight (DW) by 34.50%. On the other hand, supplementation of TH to NaCl treated mustard seedlings showed elevation by 13.81%, 11.83% and 16.76% in shoot, root length and plant DW respectively as compared to plants treated with NaCl (200 mM) alone. Oil content was drastically affected by NaCl treatment; however, TH added plants showed enhanced oil percentage from 19.35% to 23.44% in the present study. NaCl also degenerate the pigment content and the maximum drop of 52.00% was recorded in Chl. ‘a’. Enhanced pigment content was observed by the application of TH to NaCl treated plants. Proline content showed increase by NaCl stress and maximum accumulation of 59.12% was recorded at 200 mM NaCl. Further enhancement to 70.37% in proline content was recorded by supplementation of TH. NaCl stress (200 mM) affirms the increase in H2O2 by 69.57% and MDA by 36.56%, but reduction in the accumulation is recorded by addition of TH to mustard seedlings. 200 mM NaCl elevated SOD, POD, APX, GR, GST, GPX, GSH and GSSG by 31.17%, 43.15%, 26.25%, 29.78%, 40.07%, 31.81%, 42.26% and 64.50% respectively. Further enhancement was observed by the application of TH to the NaCl fed seedlings. NaCl stress suppresses the uptake of important elements in both roots and shoots, however addition of TH restored the elemental uptake in the present study. Mustard seedlings treated with NaCl and TH showed restricted Na uptake as compared to seedlings treated with NaCl alone. Role of Trichoderma harzianum in mitigating NaCl stress in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L) through antioxidative defense system.

In the present review, vermicompost is described as an excellent soil amendment and a biocontrol agent which make it the best organic fertilizer and more eco-friendly as compared to chemical fertilizers. Vermicompost is an ideal organic manure for better growth and yield of many plants. It can increase the production of crops and prevent them from harmful pests without polluting the environment. Application of vermicompost increased seed germination, stem height, number of leaves, leaf area, leaf dry weight, root length, root number, total yield, number of fruits/plant, chlorophyll content, pH of juice, TSS of juice, micro and macro nutrients, carbohydrate (%) and protein (%) content and improved the quality of the fruits and seeds. Studies suggested that treatments of humic acids, plant growth promoting bacteria and vermicomposts can be used for a sustainable agriculture discouraging the use of chemical fertilizers.

The soils treated with vermicompost had significantly more EC in comparison to unamended plots. The addition of vermicompost in soil resulted in decrease of soil pH. The physical properties such as bulk density and total porosity in soil amended with vermicompost were improved. The results of this experiment revealed that addition of vermicompost had significant (P < 0.05) positive effects on the soil chemical, physical properties.

Influence of vermicompost on soil chemical and physical properties in tomato ( Lycopersicum esculentum ) field

Trichoderma species are commonly used as biological control agents against phytopathogenic fungi and some isolates are able to improve plant growth. In this study, the effects of three Trichoderma isolates including Trichoderma harzianum isolate T969, T. harzianum isolate T447 and Trichoderma sp. isolate T in tomato seedling vigor and their nutrient uptake via two inoculants introduction methods (inoculating seed with Trichoderma spore suspension and inoculating nursery soil with Trichoderma fortified wheat) were examined. Seed germination rate was not affected by Trichoderma application, but shoot height, shoot diameter, shoot fresh and dry weight and root fresh and dry weight in tomato seedlings were interestingly (p ≤ 0.05) increased when sown in Trichoderma sp. T and T. harzianum T969 fortified soil and when compared to the control. The soil amended by Trichoderma sp. T and T. harzianum T969 had marked increase in leaf number and leaf area (p ≤ 0.05). Chlorophyll content increased in seedling grown in Trichoderma sp. T amended soil as well as in Trichoderma sp. T and T. harzianum T969 coated seed. A dramatic increase (p ≤ 0.05) in the concentrations of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , P and K + were recorded in the seedling shoot and root among T. harzianum T447 soil amended treatment

Effect of Trichoderma isolates on tomato seedling growth response and nutrient uptake

This experiment aims to evaluate the effects of vermicompost produced from sheep manure on growth, yield and quality of 2 fruit cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) varieties (cv. ‘Sultan F1’ and cv. ‘Storm F1’) under greenhouse condition. Four vermicompost treatments at the rate of 0 (control), 10, 20 and 30 t ha-1 were incorporated into the top 15 cm of soil. During the experiment, fruits were harvested three times per week and fruit number and weight were recorded for 3 months. Leaf number, plant height and chlorophyll content were measured at 30, 60 and 90 days after transplanting, while leaf area, stem and leaf dry weight and fruit qualitative properties were evaluated at 90 days after transplanting. The results showed that leaf number, plant height and chlorophyll content increased significantly (P  0.05) compared to control plots for both varieties at 30, 60 and 90 days after transplanting. The plots treated with 30 t ha-1 vermicompost showed increase in leaf are, stem and leaf dry weight for both varieties. The application of vermicompost at 30 t ha-1 increased total fruit yield 26% for cv. ‘Sultan F1’ and 25% for cv. ‘Storm F1’ compared to the control. The plots treated with vermicompost at 30 t ha-1 enhanced fruit number per plant 26% for cv. ‘Sultan F1’ and 25% for cv. ‘Storm F1’ than plot without vermicompost. Fruit harvested from plants receiving vermicompost had higher total soluble solid (TSS), lower juice acidity and more dry matter than plots without vermicompost. Growth and yield parameters were improved with increasing vermicompost rates up to 20 t ha-1. There are no significant different between plots at 20 and 30 t ha-1 vermicompost in all evaluated parameters.

The effect of sheep-manure vermicompost on quantitative and qualitative properties of cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.) grown in the greenhouse

This study was conducted to determine to find out how long the grapevine cuttings of rootstock 41B should be submerged in order to increase adventitious root formation. The cuttings were placed in a big container filled with tap water in an order of 72, 48, 24 and 12 hours. Data obtained showed that generally water soaking increases rooting of the cuttings. Auxin applied afterwards also has a positive effect on inducing rooting. Keeping the cuttings submerged in water at least 24 hours and applying IBA afterwards resulted in the best results. Water soaking and/or IBA, however, did not improve the top growth of the cuttings.

Best duration for submersion of grapevine cuttings of rootstock 41B in water to increase root formation

In this study the effect of salinity at different levels on growth, yield and quality of greenhouse tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) grown in hydroponics culture was evaluated. Salinity treatments were applied at EC of 2.5, 3, 4, 5 and 6 dS m -1 by adding NaCl to standard nutrient solution. The results indicated that plant height and leaf number were significantly (P≤0.05) decreased with increasing salinity. Total leaf area at EC of 6 dS m -1 decreased by 29% in comparison to 2.5 dS m -1 . Chlorophyll content was significantly (P≤0.05) reduced at EC of above 3 dS m -1 . Stomatal conductance in nutrient solution with EC of 6 dS m -1 , reduced by 28.2% compared to 2.5 dS m -1 . Fruit fresh weight at EC of 6 dS m -1 decreased by 29% in comparison to 2.5 dS m -1 . Total fruit yield reduced by 8.7, 21.7, 36 and 48.9% at EC of 3, 4, 5 and 6 dS m -1 , respectively, compared with 2.5 dS m-1. Total soluble solid was significantly (P≤0.05) increased at EC of above 3 dS m-1. Fruit dry weight at EC of 6 dS m-1 increased by 8.7% compared with 2.5 dS m -1 . Titratable acidity increased by 2.7, 9.9, 20.3 and 28.9% at EC of 3, 4, 5 and 6 dS m -1 , respectively, compared with 2.5 dS m -1 . The results of this experiment showed that growth parameters and yield reduced with increasing salinity, but qualitative properties were improved by salinity.
