Managing in an age of modularity

The engineer-to-order (ETO) industry’s business environment constantly changes, which results in challenges related to project management, on-time delivery, quality, and market competition. Companies face pressure to optimize production while demand for personalized products, and accordingly the complexity level increases. To address these challenges, companies require to identify the most important complexity drivers to improve planning, get a better overview of the resource allocation, and improve internal processes. This study proposes a design-time estimation model based on the most important complexity drivers: 1) Functional requirement, 2) Number of technologies, 3) Level of connectivity, 4) Regulation and standards. This study presents key complexity drivers for assessing the expected hours to design a product in an ETO industry. Complexity drivers are explored qualitatively and quantitatively from (i) literature review; (ii) internal regular meetings and; (iii) data analysis. The gathered complexity drivers are weighted and combined in order to develop the mathematical design-time model. Finally, an IT-tool is prototyped to test the mathematical model at the case company. The application of the developed IT-tool is also tested at the case company to prove the usability.

Abstract Maintenance is an essential aspect to keeping production facilities running and safe. However, without an overview of the maintenance impact on production, gaining clarification of the impact of maintenance is difficult. This paper introduces modularization of maintenance based on the dimensions of maintenance: physical, action, and process. The approach is applied in a case study where maintenance decisions are improved and faster than prior to the introduction of the modularized maintenance.

Modularizing Maintenance for Improved Production Impact Clarification

Assessing the financial potential of implementing a strategy, based on sharing of key modules and interfaces across a portfolio is difficult. However, this is a critical input when deciding strategic direction in industrial organizations. Through a case study, this paper gives an example of how to map and evaluate the architectures in a portfolio to identify the financial potential for implanting a platform-based modularization strategy. The approach has been applied in a global world-leading OEM with 50.000+ product variants and a turnover of USD 3,5b (2015). The results show a potential for reducing the cost-base by up to 15% through systematically sharing of key design principles across 80% of the company’s portfolio. This has supported the discussion of adjusting innovation strategy in the organization. The core contribution of the paper is the operational application of the systematic Architecture Mapping and Evaluation approach (AME) and discussion of how it can support strategic decision-making related to modularization. The approach builds on the understanding that a top-down assessment can give a starting point for implementing a level of modularity across a portfolio.
