Biodiesel production from palm olein: A sustainable bioresource for Nigeria.

Human activities are becoming more complex and widespread, particularly the use of metal-based materials in everyday life and industry, resulting in increased corrosion that occurs and inhibits the process. Metal corrosion can be slowed by coating the metal with a corrosion inhibitor. Over the last decade, research into ionic liquids (ILs) as corrosion inhibitors has grown at an exponential rate. Metals are effectively inhibited by several cation ILs namely imidazolium, phosphonium, pyridazinium, benzimidazole, pyridinium, and others. ILs-based corrosion inhibitors are used to protect common metals such as carbon steel, copper, magnesium, stainless steel, and zinc. However, IL-based corrosion inhibitors are still used infrequently in industry. As a result, the purpose of this review paper is to demonstrate everything from research to the commercialization process in the industrialized world. The review paper goes into detail about the different types of ILs used as corrosion inhibitors; the mechanism of corrosion inhibition in immobilized fluids; the impact of turbulence on corrosion; the price of ILs in the future; the eco-friendly (the greenness) of ILs as corrosion inhibitors; and the industrial commercialization of ILs. • The use of ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitors will be critical in the industrial world. • Ionic liquids will outperform other types of corrosion inhibitors in the future. • The future focus will be on the production process, price, and commercialization of ionic liquid-based corrosion inhibitors. 

Ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitor: From research and development to commercialization

Slaughterhouse waste is considered to be an emerging issue because of its disposal cost. As an alternative, it would be a great prospect for the bioeconomy society to explore new usages of these leftover materials. As per food safety rules mentioned by EU legislation, all bone waste generated by slaughterhouses ought to be disposed of by rendering. The huge quantity of worldwide bone waste generation (130 billion kilograms per annum) is an environmental burden if not properly managed. The waste animal bones can be efficiently employed as a heterogeneous catalyst to produce biodiesel. This mini review summarized the recent literature reported for biodiesel generation using waste animal bones derived heterogeneous catalyst. It discusses the sources of bone waste, catalyst preparation methods, particularly calcination and its effects, and important characteristics of bones derived catalyst. It suggests that catalysts extracted from waste animal bones have suitable catalytic activity in transesterification of different oil sources to generate a good quality biodiesel.

Corrosion inhibition of A36 mild steel in 0.5 M acid medium using waste citrus limonum peels

In this study Zeolite Y was successfully synthesized from local kaolin in Ado-0do Ota, Ogun state Nigeria through a novel process of dealumination. The thermal activation of kaolin was achieved through the process of metakaolinization at 850 oC for 6 hours in a furnace and dealumination with H2SO4 in order to achieve a desire silica/alumina molar ratio between 3 and 8. Zeolitization involved alkaline attack of dealuminated metakaolin and its consequent transformation into Zeolite Y crystal. Silica/Alumina molar ratio of 5.84 of metakaolin was synthesized under hydrothermal treatment with aqueous NaOH at atmospheric pressure. It was then aged for 7 days at room temperature and crystallized at 100 oC for 24 hours; Zeolite NaY of molar ratio of 3.46 was achieved and then modified to its hydrogen form by ion exchange with NH4Cl. The molar ratio of Zeolite Y in hydrogen form is 3.22. The samples were characterized with X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The result showed that zeolite Y was synthesized from Arobieye mined kaolin with a molar ratio of 6SiO2 : Al2O3 : 9Na2O : 24H2O by ageing at room temperature for 24 hours and crystallized at 100 oC for 24 hours.

Corrosion inhibitive effects of calcium-modified zinc phosphate coating on A36 mild steel

Biodiesel was produced from the transesterification of soybean oil using calcium oxide and cow bone (an animal waste bone that contains hydroxyapatite, a calcium phosphate mineral) as heterogeneous catalysts. The soybean oil used was characterized using gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GCMS) and the cow bone catalyst produced was characterized using X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer. The effects of the variation of methanol/oil mole ratio (9–15), catalyst concentration (10–20 wt/wt%) and reaction temperature (55–65 °C) on biodiesel yield during the transesterification of soybean oil with methanol was investigated. Reaction time of 3 hours and stirring rate of 500 rpm were kept constant. It was observed that the calcination of cow bone catalyst (at 800 °C) enhanced its conversion to apatite [Ca5(PO4)3OH] and increased the yield of biodiesel obtained. Biodiesel yield results revealed an optimum condition of methanol/oil mole ratio of 9, catalyst concentration of 15 wt/wt% and reaction temperature of 55 °C. Also, the results obtained showed that the performance trends of the two catalysts used were similar. And the close values of highest biodiesel yields obtained when the two heterogenous catalysts were used separately (yields of 94.8 and 92.2% using calcium oxide and calcined cow bone catalysts respectively) implies that the use of low-cost and readily available calcined cow bone catalyst is a promising alternative to CaO catalyst.
