Kinetic ignition enhancement of CH 4 -air and H 2 -air diffusion flames by a nonequilibrium plasma discharge of air was studied experimentally and numerically through the development of a well-defined counterflow system. Measurements of ignition temperatures and major species, as well as computations of rates of production and sensitivity analyses, were performed to understand the kinetic enhancement pathways for ignition by plasma discharge of air. It was found that plasma discharge of air led to significant kinetic ignition enhancement illustrated by large decreases in the ignition temperatures for a broad range of strain rates. Examination of the radical and NO x production in the plasma showed that the enhancement was caused primarily by the catalytic effect of NO x . The results of numerical simulations of the counterflow burner with preheated air and NO, addition showed the existence of different ignition regimes, which appeared due to the competition between radical production by NO x and other pathways, as well as heat release. There were two ignition regimes for small concentrations of NO, and three ignition regimes for large concentrations of NO,. Numerical simulations agreed well with the experimental measurements and suggested a new strategy for plasma-assisted ignition in supersonic flow, where a combination of thermal and nonthermal plasma would work more efficiently for ignition enhancement.

Kinetic Ignition Enhancement of Diffusion Flames by Nonequilibrium Magnetic Gliding Arc Plasma

Gas–solid noncatalytic (GSNC) reactions in porous particles are analyzed employing volume reaction model (VRM). Both single-stage and two-stage models have been used in the work. Earlier analysis for such reactions was mostly restricted to the first-order reactions with respect to the gaseous component. The present work has used a range of reaction orders with respect to both gaseous and solid reactants. Front tracking method was employed for solving the moving boundary problem. Finite volume method (FVM) has been used for the first time for the analysis of GSNC reactions in porous particles, based on moving boundary zone models. The discretized equations are solved by tridiagonal matrix algorithm. The results for the first-order reaction agree well with the analytical solution. FVM solution compares well with other numerical method (integral transformation followed by orthogonal collocation). Numerical results have also been validated with reported experimental data for reduction of Magnetite by CO. FVM is thus established to be a suitable numerical method to solve GSNC reactions in porous particles employing VRM. Analysis of gas–solid noncatalytic reactions in porous particles: Finite volume method

Experiments were conducted to study structural changes (diameter, specific surface area and density) and mode of combustion of lignite char in a fluidised bed combustion process. Analysis of data demonstrates the effect of attrition along with combustion. Internal burning at least to the extent to which burn off has been studied, does not play a significant role. Despite attrition effects, the change in diameter approximates that of an idealised shrinking sphere.



On a effectue des experiences pour etudier les changements structuraux (diametre, superficie de la surface specifique et densite) et le mode de combustion de produit de carbonisation de lignite dans un procede de combustion sur lit fluidise. L'analyse des donnees montre l'effet d'attrition qui accompagne la combustion. La combustion interne, au moins au point jusqu'ou la pleine combustion a ete observee, ne joue pas un role significatif. Malgre les effets de l'attrition, le changement de diametre se rapproche de celui d'une sphere retrecissante idealisee.

Multiple Fluid Solid Non-Catalytic (FSNC) reactions have been analyzed in a single particle based on sharp interface model (SIM) using Finite Volume Method (FVM), which is shown to be a suitable technique for solving moving boundary problems involving multiple chemical reactions and diffusion. The effect of various model parameters, like the order of reaction, Thiele modulus, thermicity and Arrhenius parameters, c20/c10, are found to have significant effects on independent, parallel and consecutive reactions.



On a analyse les reactions multiples fluide-solides non catalytiques (FSNC) dans une particule simple d'apres le modele d'interface abrupte (SIM) en utilisant la methode des volumes finis (FVM), et on montre que cette technique convient pour resoudre les problemes de surfaces limites mobiles qui impliquent de multiples reactions chimiques et la diffusion. On a trouve que l'effet des divers parametres de modele, tels que l'ordre de reaction, le module de Thiele, la thermicite et les parametres d'Arrhenius, c20/c10, avait des effets significatifs sur les reactions independantes, paralleles et consecutives.

Generalized Mathematical Modeling of Fluid-Solid Non-Catalytic Reactions Using Finite Volume Method: Multiple Reactions

Fluidized bed catalytic cracking is an important secondary process in a modern refinery. Unlike in western countries Indian refineries are often operated in distillate mode requiring design modifications and changes in operating conditions. Riser hydrodynamics together with cracking kinetics are often very useful to simulate the performance of FCC riser reactor and accurately predict conversion of the process. The present paper reports the experimental data on hydrodynamics of a FCC riser including its pressure and voidage profiles along the riser length in a cold model of the FCC unit assembly. Effects of some operating variables on the riser hydrodynamics have been reported.
